Since folding is using your resources, is it a tax write off if you buy something specifically for the purpose of folding?
Also if you donate to folding, is it a tax write off?

I ask these questions cause my company is in the process of upgrading about 1500 computers, from p4 3.0ghz to c2d or whatnot. They will be upgrading to Vista and in doing so the IT guy says they will have to upgrade most if not all the older p4's, memory and HD's. I breifly talked to him about what they do with old material and he said they usually have a company pick it up and destory it. SO i got to thinking. If I could some how talk to my Bosses about donating the unneeded items, would their be a tax write off for them? Just trying to gather information so when they do do it, I can have a thoughtout plan of action. At the very least I'll be taking home many many computers for the strict use of Folding 24/7 out of my garage/basement.
I just recently realized what folding was and what a great cause it is ( i mean recently by today! ) so soon as I get home I'll be d/ling the stuff and hopefully running it on 3 comps everyday while im at work and when i sleep :)

General answer is:

Give money directly to Stanford- yes

Just about anything else, no. Sucks but that's the general gist of things from what I've read.

nope wont be a tax writeoff... but you can offer to "destroy" it for them for free! :)

hehe thats what i hope to do

The primary reason they can’t be written off even though your company is a business is the company no doubt already wrote them off. They either took a one time deduction as a business expense or depreciated them over time.

It’s possible the company might not allow you to have them is because the people who pick them up will give the company a receipt as salvage.

Yes, it all sucks, can’t argue;)
