If anyone has done case mods for other people, how much do you usually charge em? I'm doing one my wife's boss's daughter and wasn't really expecting to get any 'profit' from it, but he told her today "Don't let him think he's getting away with doing it for free."

The mod is painting interior/exterior, a Puma logo cutout with the dremel, and a CCFL w on/off switch LED. Do you charge by hour, project? I'm kinda at a loss to know how much to ask for.

uh

DHITB?

seriously, just charge what you think is fair. probabily costs of parts + 7*hours worked?

My case was painted inside/out and a custom window cut, cost me $50 including the paint and dremel cutting wheels (about $20 for supplies)

you can go with hourly rate - or if you are confident in your time involved, go for a fixed fee you agree upon up front.

i charged $200 to do something like that once ;)

its nice knowing rich newbies sometimes...

but meh, if you dont feel like being greedy $7~8/hr seems fair i guess?

Cool, thanks.

He paid for all the parts, paint, etc, and I'm using his garage to do all the work in. He's also doing a bit of the work too (although what he's done so far I have to figure out how to undo :S ) I'll probably got with the $7 an hour and figure how long I've worked on it.

thanks again

Actually $200 doesn't seem that steep. Everyone is used to machines doing stuff for cheap. Having people do things be hand for you costs much more.

I think painting is a bitch to do. Especially doing multiple coats with sanding. People get auto grade paint jobs for $50-100 and even then the paint shop isn't making much on the deal.

Since he is your wife's bosses daughter, I would just charge him for parts and say $50, unless of course it takes you like 8 hours which it should not. Keep in mind that he does sign your wife's paycheck, and gives her raises so you can buy your own mods.
