I'm traveling to Indonesia next week, which appears to be 220 volt two-pin plug wall outlets. It looks like I'll need a plug adapter, but will I need a voltage converter to charge my Nikon D40's battery?

look on the charger, it'll say "input" followed by a range VAC. If that range includes 220 then you need a plug adaptor only, if not then you need a voltage adaptor. It *should* include it. Radioshack, $10 should be all ya need.

You should be in good shape. I quick check of the D40 manual states: AC 100-240V, 50/60Hz. But check the back of your charger to make sure.

All you need is the plug adapter to make the cable fit in the wall. You do NOT need a transformer.

Most electronics have chargers that handle dual voltage. I've been to Ireland a few times, and have taken many digital camera and laptops. Their chargers did the voltage conversions, and all I needed was the little adapter to make the plug fit.

If you find any kind of touristy market, you'll likely be able to find what you need for a fraction of what it is back home. I found the converter I needed to charge up my D300 (same battery) within an hour of being in Bangkok over Christmas. Might not be something you want to go into blindly, but in case you forget it, break it, lose it, ect. they should be available. Enjoy the trip!
