Okay, I've got an ancient machine here at work. Its a Pentium 4 1.7GHz and I want to upgrade to an Athlon64 3200+
Am I going to have problems with the OS (WindowsXP) if I just switch out the motherboard and processor without doing a format? I am in the middle of a project and under no circumstances will I be able to wipe my hard drive.
Is there something I should do, or drivers I should remove, before I power off the system and swap the components? I've had problems in the past when upgrading the motherboard and older OS'es, so I was wondering how Windows XP will handle the transition.
I'm dying to upgrade the machine but at the same time I can't have any down time.
