Changing the default DVD player on Windows 2000?

Hi everyone,

My dad is moving out of our home in a day or two and i've set him up a laptop to keep in touch with me and listen to his music/watch his movies. I've installed Kazaa Lite Codec Pack on here including Media Player Classic. When i put a dvd in this old Laptop the movie will play smoothly with Media Player Classic but not the program that is set to autorun for DVDs on Windows 2000... which is called DVD player.

How can i change Media Player Classic to the default DVD playing application? I tried changing file types such as BUP, VOB and IFO (i think that is what they are called on the dvd disk from memory) to open with Media Player Classic but when i put a DVD in it still runs with DVD Player (the default application that comes with W2K). I also tried changing default access programs but that only had the option for a media player, not dvd player.

Can someone tell me how i can set Media Player Classic to the default DVD playing application on Windows 2000 please?

Thanks a lot!

I am not sure this works in 2K, but in Xp:
I would use tweakui, and under autoplay, go to the handlers section and create an autoplay handler for MPC. Then in my computer, in the drives properties I would default DVD play to MPC.

Again, I don't know if that will work for 2K. I have not had it installed for ever. Hope it helps.

I tried it but i couldn't find the option in tweakui 1.3 for W2K (XP version wouldn't work). So instead i thought to myself hmm it must be a registry setting telling it to use the crappy laggy built in app if it is ignoring my instructions in file type associations to use Media Player Classic... so i searched system32 for a DVD app and found dvdplay.exe

Then i searched the registry for that file name and there was 1 result... a shell command association for DVD! Said %SystemRoot%\System32\DVDPlay.exe /play %1

I changed this to "C:\Program Files\K-Lite Codec Pack\Media Player Classic\mplayerc.exe" /play %1 and it works perfectly now! :D

Then i told media player classic to run all files in full screen on launch and now i'm happy.

I hope this helps people with the same issue in future!
