My current speaker setup is as follows...

E-MU 0404 to Onkyo TX-DS777 to Sony SS-K70ED Floorspeakers ($600 when they first came out!)

Due to space issues I think I'd get more use out of bookshelf speakers and a sub. I should note I'm happy with the sound, its just I need smaller speakers.

Would it be worthwhile for me to sell my current gear (the receiver and floorspeakers) and get something like the AV123 ELT525M Mini Monitor and Gizmo amp and maybe add a sub later on?

Can you keep the receiver and toss the Gizmo? Or, I think there were some ELTs on B-stock still...

I was just thinking of getting the Gizmo since it was compact and I was trying to save space and reduce heat output. The Onkyo keeps me warm in the winter! They are HOTTTT...

Well, it'll do that. And if you get it through AV123, they made the volume pot affect the sub out.

So do you think it is a good option or would the downgrade be pretty severe? My current speakers are a dome tweeter + 5.25" driver + 5.25" passive radiator.

ELTs are still fairly large, so make sure you know the dimensions (but much smaller relative to your current speakers). They are a little narrower and deeper than most bookshelf monitors. There is a certain resonance to them that makes them great for music, but not the best for movies (and TBH part of that is that mine need better isolation).

Floorspeakers aka towers tend to have a lot of impact and control thanks to the larger air cavity to work with. Assuming equal quality, towers tend to trump bookshelves...but you don't have room for towers, so bookshelves trump nothing, eh? The ELTs are rather nice - especially for the budget - and there's always the trial period to fall back on if you think it's a major downgrade. But I think they should be satisfying.

I'm using much the same setup as you're looking at, although the amp is a lower-model Onkyo instead (being replaced with a NAD, with a headphone tube amp doing occasional preamp duty).

Ashmedai: Thanks for your comments on the ELTs!

Alai: Thanks for the link at PolkAudio.com but I'm not a member there so I'd feel a bit odd at asking to buy his speakers right after joining. I have looked at the CBM-170 SE before and I'm still considering them. The Rockets and LSi9 are a little more than I want to spend right now. If I were to spend ~$600 it would be on Magnepan MMG's :). (In fact I was strongly considering selling my Xbox1, 360, and floorspeakers for MMGs)

Eh, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Polk Audio is a fairly tight knit community but that's because of how friendly everyone is with each other. It is not due to being closed to outsiders. I was actually considering buying his ELT525M but I decided I wanted to try some Ascend speakers.

Yes, but I found out my amp/receiver's left channel is blown. Lol. I am now prowling for a nice stereo amp.

I run the gizmo and really think it is awesome! The guy at tweak audio city is giving you a $50 credit too if you get the v1.0 since it only accepts 3.0V of input (my dac would push higher) but it takes like 5 minutes to mod in spec. They got a matching dac coming out that looks hot.

But yes, i got the av123 special and really think it is perfect for a computer.

I'll let you know how I feel about my C325BEE. FedEx should be bringing it today.

Grr, I should really get some banana plugs...

Strike that: delivery moved to tomorrow. :p

I can recommend the ELT525 as a great computer speaker. While I use 3 of the X-CS models for mains and a pair of x-sls for rears in my system, I do prefer the presentation of the ELT525.
Very good detail and they got some nice tight bass too. Of course a sub is requiered if you like big bass.
The RS250 sounds bigger in every aspect but I prefer the ELT525 for a computer 2 channel system with a fast subwoofer like the x-sub or similar.
I used to work for AV123 so I am very familiar with the lineup and the quality they deliver so I can recommend them as a superb value!
Before I left we contacted several computer website to review an ELT combo with computer users in mind...I hope we get to see some reviews soon.
Regards

Shaolin95 - Will the promotion for the ELT525 + Gizmo last for another few months? I can keep my current speakers for a few more months before having to go to the ELT setup. Also, do you feel the Gizmo has enough power for the ELT525 or do you think I should stick with my Onkyo receiver (only issue with it is that it is rather anemic on the bass, but it does provide 125wpc)

EDIT: Ashmedai (I keep typing Ashmedia...argh) Did you get your NAD amp? How do you like it?

Your Onkyo should be fine.

I have the etl525 gizmo setup and the gizmo is more than enough power, it gets quite loud with the speakers. I haven't turned it up more than half.

Sent you a pm too for another option for purchasing your setup. It will be a little cheaper figuring av123 charges $50 shipping.

Btw. My CMT-340 SE rock. Got a GFA-555MKII running them.

WHOOOOOOIIIEEEE!!! So nice!

Reaches higher and lower than the Swan M200MKII. And sounds crisper. Haven't really had a chance to run them too loudly, but distortion hasn't hit at backdoor or picnic BBQing volume.

Lower noise floor (which is what I wanted it for) and as a bonus did a better job on fine detail and bass with some old Polks I had shelved a while ago.

When I got my ELTs, there was some fun with the shipping company misbehaving - Kyle was very helpful in sorting it out. So...yeah, call him if you need anything.
