changing resolutions hang

I have a Mag Innovision LT77s. when using newer video cards, the monitor hangs when changing resolutions, itll take quite a while to do it. for example, with my 9600 pro, it will take a few seconds to display change the resoultion when i start a game, and when i exit the game. this does not occur on an old TNT2 i have, and i was wondering why this happens?

EDIT: its a 17" TFT LCD screen
