Hello, I currently have a precision workstation 380 with a Pentium D 840 cpu running the 955x chipset. I'm planning on upgrading to the precison 390 mobo with the 975x chipset. I would like to go with a faster/more efficent CPU, dual or quad core. Your suggestions? And I primarily game and watch downloaded videos with some Photoshop use if that helps at all.

The 975X chipset should support 65nm Core 2 Duo CPUs, and might support quad-core chips as well. You'll have to look up the info on that board to find out which specific CPUs it is compatible with, because it'll depend on the BIOS. Without knowing that, it isn't really possible to make any recommendations.

my ASUS P5W DH Deluxe (975X) is compatible with up to a Q6600 at least (this is pretty obvious because it's what I'm running at the moment while posting this)...

Is the Q6600 a pretty good cpu? I've been running AMD for the longest time and am not 100% familiar with the Intel setups.

With Dell, thier bios dictates what processors are supported. They have a 945g motherboard that is out that should support up to core 2 duos, but they bios limit it to only support up to Pentium D's, No allendale or c2d support.

Yes, the Q6600 is a good CPU. However, like I said earlier, you'll have to check out the motherboard's compatibility list to see if it'll even work with that chip.

Q6700s are harder to find and in general more expensive than Q6600s for very little gain. I would say just go with a Q6600.
