My friend got a virus on his notebook and it currupted his windows files and it was unable to boot. So he asked me to fix it. His notebook did not come with a software/firmware buddle cd like many notebooks do so no Windows CD. I have an old windows cd from before SP1. I used that CD to reformat and install windows.

Here is the problem. I need to change his cd key so that he can actully register and download SP1 and SP2 and so on. I have his legit CD-key for XP pro because its posted on the bottom of his laptop. Normaly I would tell him to call IBM cause I know they will mail a software budle for little cost but He and I both deploy to Iraq on Friday.

So what would be the best course of action here.
Thanks for your help

It depends on wether your software is oem or not. If your copy of XP is retail. the oem cd key on the notebook won't work. You could try to reactivate it, and do the call in thing, They MIGHT give you a new reactivation code, they did it once for me.
