Changed thermal paste in T61

I bought Rereg's Lenovo T61 6460-66U laptop 3-4 weeks ago. Today I changed the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU with AS5. I would have replaced the thermal tape on the chipset, but I left my bag of CPUs and Intel die heatcaps (are they called HSTs?) at my arpartment. In my old G530 I replaced the tape with a heatcap and it improved temperatures slightly but insignificantly.

Results?
Idle temperatures have a very minor improvement.
Stress temperatures are 10-20*C better for CPU+chipset. Used to get 80-85*C on chipset and CPU, now I get 60-70*C on both when stressing with IntelBurnTest. Will have to watch GPU more closely; not really noticing a difference there.

I get about 13 GFlops instead of 12.7 GFlops. :p
(My G530 got 5.5 GFlops, and my workstation at my apartment pulls at least 55 GFlops).
 
Couple corrections:

CPU and chipset hang around 45*C when idle; before it was 55-60*C.
CPU and chipset do not appear to exceed 75*C when stressed; before it was 81-86*C.
GPU hangs around 55*C when idle; before it was 60-65*C.
GPU doesn't appear to exceed 75*C when stressed; before it was 81-86*C.

An excellent 10-20*C improvement. More durable. :D
 
Why do use AS 5 STILL? That's yesterdays stuff today we use Mx-4 thermal compound.

AS 5 have a 200 hour break in period. So you might wait a bit and see how it pans out the next 200 hours

I need to redo my tp on my T61p again.
 
AS5 is still very good, and it's much cheaper than most other compounds.

Was thinking about diamond paste though. How does it compare to that "Mx-4" thing?
 
Its ok to use whatever you have. AS5 applied correctly is still better than stock.

It's really thick and hard to work with. It will also polish any markings off the cpu. :D

Have you ever used MX-3? IC Diamond 7 isn't that thick and certainly isn't hard to work with... they don't recommend spreading it as the peadrop method works very well and the paste selfspreads superthin. I have had great luck with it, its a few C better than AS5 until you get past 65-70C where the AS5 temps start rising much more rapidly and the performance delta grows.

You are right about it polishing off some of the cpu markings, I think if you reapplied it enough you would lap the CPU :p
