I originally have the Radeon 9200, 128mb. Swapped it to a 9800 PRO 128mb. Now the CPU at idle is 56C case temp 40C

Before it was CPU 45C idle, case temp ~33C

I never knew the Radeon 9800 gives out so much heat??

Those are really bad temps.

Keep in mind it's summer now. Hmm...if you aren't using any PCI slots, add a PCI slot fan, that should help. Either that, or add a fan where PCI slots are.

They do, that's why they have their own HSF.

lol you beat me to it while i looked for the link :p

oh and a side mounted fan like one on the door would help with temps. if you dont already have one and isnt a spot on the door for a fan then it would require alittle bit of modding. a side fan can really help cool beasty vid cards

I already have 3 chassis fans running and a blower installed eek

I have a 9800pro and that thing runs SO DAMN HOT. I gotta put the vga silencer or something on it, it gets no active air flow, its terrible.

Doesn't the 9200 use passive cooling? Going from a card that likes a tiny passive heatsink to one that likes HUGE cooling solutions such as Zalman or Arctic Cooling will certainly increase thermal load. :D The blower (or sucker if you are inside the case ;) ) is a good idea.

Some of the 9200's use passive cooling some don't. My brother has a Gigabyte 9200 and it has a fan.

The Zalman vga hsf is also good. You can get an optional fan for it; I would recommend putting two instead of one. Mush better results. Also; there's enough spave under the heatsink to fit short ramsinks.

id imagine that the 9800pro produces more heat than the 9200. that would explain some of the temp increase. i know when i upgraded from my geforce 5600 ultra to my radeon 9800 pro i noticed both increased temps in the water, and in my case temps.

This may sound "odd" but a new video card should not raise your CPU temp that much. I would check to make sure the heat sink is on good. Including redoing it with some freash AS5.

The 9800 is a much hotter card that you had, and possibly bigger which may restrict airflow some. It's increased your case temps most likely and that in addition to any airflow restrictions it may cause will result in a warmer CPU. It's not that impossible.

A little better ventilation and cable management may solve the problem, although that depends on what your existing fan situation and everything is.

One of those PCI blowers can do a pretty good job.

I've managed to dig up a picture of my comp when I first built it.

The graphics card in the pic is the old Radeon 9200. Minor things were changed such as the SATA cable was in the wrong socket  . Cables were tidyed up a bit and I got new ram.

#1 your psu is working harder => more heat generated from PSU
#2 GPU heat is recirculating inside case over and over. -> Arctic Cooling VGA cooler exhaust it out.
Will cost you anywhere from $10-20 to fix #2 which will help A LOT.

the artic cooling vga silencer is a great way to go, i've got one myself :) got it from coolerguys.com, considerably cheaper than newegg and i've never had any problems with them in the couple of years i've been shopping from them.

You can also put a window on your computer because it usually drops the case temps by 2 degrees and it looks really cool. A blow hole can also help get some of the warm air out that rises to the top of the case.

I've done it before, but I honestly don't understand. Would someone please explain to me why you would want to put a blower underneath your video card? The fan on the card is pulling air onto the heatsink. The blower is pulling air out of the system. So in theory wouldn't the two be cancelling each other out?

Windows... must be made out of something that conducts heat better than aluminum or steel... or... maybe this mod had bunch of opening on windows

just like tokath I got one of the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer
I got mine for $9.99 on special at svc now they are

Regular price: $21.99
Sale price: $14.99

dropped my gpu temp..oc better and case temp went down 3c (not sure if it will stay that way or just lucky, or maybe I can't read lol )

fan is a lot quitier than the stock cooler too
