ok I want to clarify some Windows 2000 Pro settings.

to change the administrators windows 2000 password we would go to:
start >> control panel >> admin tools >> computer management >> local users and groups >> users >> right click on administrator >> set password.
is that it? you dont have to verify your own password?

I have also successfully shared my Windows 2000 server with my Win XP Home laptop. I can access both hard drives and vice versa. But the problem I am having is when I access a shared folder on the Win 2000 (server) from the laptop (xp home). It will ask me for a username and a password. How do I change this password because my password is like 1234? :p I remeber set this up when I was installing Win 2000 therefore it is pretty unfeasible to re install win 2000 just to change it.

- (yes they are on the same MSHOME domain).
- (yes I do not see it when I right click on the shared folder options to set it was shared (ie. the HD))
- (yes i logged in as full admin)

I think you do it the same way. On the server machine, change the password for the user that you want to logon with. Start > Run > lusrmgr.msc (that's an L)

thanks for the reply. thanks that command works but however unfortunately thats not it. That allows me change the password for log in; not change the password to access the workstations shared folders/resources, etc.

lol i found the exact same site, however it still didnt do justice for me :S

There is no separate password for shared files/folders unless your using some 3rd party software. Permissions to access files or folders are based on the username/password accounts on the computer.

are u sure?

i remember upon installing win2000 spk4 integrated it specfically asked me to:
- auto setup my tcp settings
- asked me for a domain name
- asked me for a user name and password for accessing folder shares
upon installatoin and restarting at start up it asked me to setup a admin user and pass
then it restarted and i was up and away

my admin login and password are different to accessing my folder shares.
my login id is "Administrator" and the password is "aa" :p
and to access my folder shares is usrname "celeron" and the password is "intel".

- yes i know this is why i want to change it :p

Yes I am sure, you must have an administrator account and another account named celeron. Go into Computer Management, expand the Local Users and groups, then click on users. You should see a list of all user accounts on your computer, one of them which will probably be name "celeron". You can right click on that user acct and "set password" to change it.

lol no i can assure you that my celeron is NOT an account of any kind but just a pass to allow me to access my shared resources. i DO remeber win2000 setup asking me for this; this is why i thought it was very strange since it has never had to ask me this QS before.

doing what u say, i get the following accounts:
- Administrator
- Guest
- ISUR_TSE-7037E937B86 which is an internet guest account
- IWAM_TSE-7037E9B7B86 which is a lauch IIS process account
- tse another admin account i made in case the main Administrator accoutn went down

Interesting, as any install of Win2k I have ever done has never asked me for a user/pass for shared folders. Are you using NTFS or fat32 as your filesystem? On the Windows 2000 system, right click on the shared folder and see if there is a tab or button there allowing you to check the security of the folder.

yep i myself; it was the first time i saw it having installed windows 2000 untold amount of times. i thought it was asking me to create user account but i remebered that win200 never has asked me to setup admin accounts when win200 aint even installed because i always remember that win2000 will ask you to create the accounts after the os istalled and it RESTARTS.

i have shared my 3 hard drives, which are all fat32. :)
when i check it, it has sharing tab but nothing related to password optoins

Shared access is given via user accounts on the serving (your win2k server) machine. If the drive is NFTS, it can be further restricted with NTFS permissions. What is the sharing security on the shared information? I mean, the specific users have access to it and so forth. I'm not sure how the file sharing works with XP Home, because it uses that "simple file sharing" option only, unlike XP Pro.

leeroy,

I just went thru and installed Windows 2000 Prof and Server SP4 integrated, at no point did it ever ask about setting up file shares, only to set the administrator password during the installation. Even after several restarts, each did *not* prompt to create any user accounts.

I even tried installations using Fat32 and NTFS with no changes other than the file system.

Sorry, but I can't help ya if I can't recreate the problem your having.

No, thats for if a user forgets their password, you can reset it. Being the all powerful administrator, you can even do this for your own account.

Problem is that when you reset the password this way, you lose some information. Not sure exactly, i think files that are encrypted. Kind of a security precaution.

To change your password the right way, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and then click Change Password.

The *only* thing that is lost when resetting a password by using the user manager is the ability to access encrypted files on a standalone system. In an AD environment there are ways that the admin can recover those encrypted files.

i think i know the reason why now.

its because i had win98
then i put win2000 on it
so it became dual boot

few months later
then put win98 on top so it removed the dual boot
because during dual boot it kept on asking for some missing NTSORKL file and i had to physically pull plug which F up my HD

few months later
now i put win2000 on it
then win2000 on top since i didnt know my password to login pc (it never asked me to!, beucase my previous installtion of win2000 info was still there therefore that is why probaly it never asked me for my details again, but by now i had forgotten my account details)
then win2000 on top because i forgot the username to the password i made
then win2000 on top - final copy!

i think because i had ex installation of the o/s which is why it remebered the previous seettings threfore it never asked me to create another admin account again.

- BTW CAN we make like a reset disk like in xp?
- its ok, it was the first time it had ever asked me for a uesr name and password to access shares but yeah i know for a fact it wasnt an universal psasword it had asked me. i too with a spare pc tried to re create that dialogue box asking me and i was going to digicam it for you but i cannot seem to recreate the error therefore i think it was due to the fact that it previous traces of the o/s installtoin like half a year ago.

btw now that i got win200 on it. how do i fully remove all the win98 obselete files.
ive deleted the main win98 folder
program files folder relating to the win98
the dual boot option so that now it only boots from win2000
deleted the win98 SWAP file. yep in win2000 they call it the page file. lol
