Short version: I want to clone windows (7 ultimate 64 bit) FROM an SSD in AHCI mode TO a conventional hdd in RAID mode. The mobo is an asrock z68.

Longer version: my wife is incapable of storing data on the convetional hard drive instead of the SSD so it keeps getting full. I want to move to the intel smart response ssd caching setup, but to do that I have to get windows on the conventional hard drive first. I think.

How can I do this without hosing my windows installation? I plan to image the c drive with easus. TIA!

I've migrated a full windows 7 install from an HDD to SSD (opposite of what you did) using Acronis Backup & Recovery Workstation.

I made an image of my windows 7 install from my HDD, copied it to another HDD I had in the same system. Unplugged the Win7 HDD, plugged in new SSD, and used either a USB boot up or an Acronis made boot up CD (can't remember which) and imaged my SSD using the image saved on the other HDD.

I would switch to RAID before cloning. I don't have the instructions here, but it's easy enough to google. All you have to do is change a reg key (IAstor?) from 3 to 0, restart, let it install the drivers, restart again, and done. Then do your clone and setup RST.

Thanks for the quick replies. That sounds familiar, I was just a little concerned because I couldn't find quite exactly the same thing I'm trying to do. I'm planning to give it a go this weekend.

Sure thing. I had recently switched my wife's pc from IDE (don't ask) to AHCI, then AHCI to RAID, and swapped from a single HDD to SSD + RAID without reinstalling W7. So yes, it can and does work to do the registry tweak.

If only she would just let me format/reload it would have been so much easier...
