Chaintech AV710 left speaker not working

I have a set of 2.1 speakers (Logitech Z340) and the Chaintech card has the jumpers in their default location. I plugged the speakers into the green line out jack first and I only got sound in the right speaker. I tried several different driver releases (currently using 451C from VIA's site) and it was the same thing.

I plugged the speakers into the black jack on the bottom which is labelled "ALT Out" in the manual, but labelled "Back Surr" on the card itself and both speakers worked fine.

So what is going on here? Isn't the "line out" the usual jack for stereo speakers? Why wasn't I getting sound from the left speaker? Is it a driver problem? Defective card? Wrong jumper settings? Bad assumption on my part about the "line out" jack in the first place?
