As a little background I've been a computer tech for the past 5 years and have worked on all types of system so I'm not just some screwdriver jocky thinking I know how to fix computers.
Anyway I received my 710 yesterday and was super happy as it's replacing a slowing dying GTXP.
About 4:30 inthe after noon I decided to start the install. I first uninstall the old GTXP drivers, shutdown and pull the herc card out. Drop the 710 in the same slot and put everything back together. Windows boots up and I start installing the newest via drivers(just released a couple days ago). At the very end of the install it seems to be hung, I give it a couple minutes before noticing everything is running bad. I check and I find that my proc is pegged at 100%. So I fight trying to kill some processes including the install. Windows was trying to install the card when I started the via install, I figured this caused windows to freakout so I hard reboot it.
Windows boots up and I see that windows is installing the drivers for it, it detected it as an Envy24 card and all seems well. I go to launch winamp to get ready to see how it all sounds but after a minute waiting for winamp to start I find that my proc is again pegged at 100%. Not good.
So I hard reboot again and go into safe mode and strip out the drivers, I find that I can't actually uninstall them because the install never finished so the uninstall log is corrupt. I strip it all out, deleting everything, stripping all via references from the registry just to be safe. I redetect the card in safe mode and it's found as an unknown device, perfect the drivers must be gone.
Reboot back into windows and decide to try the old 1.43 drivers that everyone suggests, thinking maybe the new drivers are shit. The 1.43's are WHQL signed so I don't expect any issues. Exact same thing, install won't complete, 100% cpu load.
At about 6:00 I decide that perhaps I have some old herc drivers sticking around causing issues or something and I know my windows is due for a wipe and reload so I go onto doing that which includes backing up way too much stuff.
Skip ahead to about 6:45 and fresh windows, beauty now everything will be slick as a dick. SAME THING, install won't complete(using 1.43 drivers), 100% cpu load. WTF? Safe mode, strip drivers, boot back to windows. This time I figure I'll install the crappy chaintech drivers on the cd, if ANY will work these will. Same thing!
The two final things I can think to try are 1) move the card to a different pci slot, 2) try the card in a different computer.
So I go about the task of moving it up one pci slot, this time I'm not trusting anything so I dont put everything back together I just leave it laying about. Boot windows and it detects the card and starts installing it like it has so many times before. Wait...did it just finish?? I think it did...sound? Nope. Wait wait wait I'm plugged into 7/8 so I open the panel and set it to hi def sound, sound now? nope. Fine, reboot for what seems like the 100th time tonight and windows boots and I get the windows start up sound. The time is 8:15.
Almost 4 hours to install a sound card because it doesn't like the pci slot it was in and if I hadn't been so lazy I would have tried that before reloading windows, but I've only ever seen one sound card not like the slot it was given and it was a creative POS. Man I fucking hate computers. On the bright side this card is a big improvement over my GTXP.
Anyway /rant just want to put this out there just in case anyone has the same issues.
