A friend and I were thinking about both getting A+ certification and MCSE win2k certification before going off to college next fall. He's got some experience working in IT at a hospital but I have no experience. Do you guys think it would it be worth it to go for the certification, if nothing else just to help get a part time job in college, maybe in the IT department?

It might not help right away, but it always helps later when trying to get internships. Not alot of college students have certs, so that puts you a little ahead (all else being equal). The A+ is a joke, so it shouldnt take much time. The MCSE or CCNA take alot more work.

They don't hurt, and could be helpful to get a part time job while your in college.. But in the end, the college degree helps out alot more.. If anything, try to get a job in your college's computer labs, doing some kind of admin work that way you have experience..

Above all other things in the computer world, experience is #1.. You can have all the certs in the world, but real world experience counts the most..

It couldn't hurt and could give you a little edge over others. Barnaby is right though, experience is the biggest factor. Of course it's a vicious catch-22. In order to get experience, you need a job but, people hiring want people with experience.

So, get the experience while you are in school anywhere you can. Like Barnaby mentioned, school computer lab, internship, etc. When you finally do go for full time employment, you will have the certifications, the diploma and experience. All you will have to do then is just peeriodically take the update corses.
