I'm Looking to go into IT when i graduate high school. im currently a sophmore. I run my own computer/network business for the past two years with 50+ clients. I thought about taking the A+ but ive heard its a waste of time and money. I want to major in IT Adminstration. I dont know what college i should go to that i can major in IT that has a heavy influence in IT/computers. Im looking to go in the northeast i currently live in nj. I would like to get an IT job that pays well within 2-3years of getting out of school. Can anyone share helpful information or similar experences. Also right now i would like to get 1 or 2 certs what should i look into that will help me get into a good school. Thanks
 
The college choice is best determined by you. Do a LOT of research on the school before enrolling there.

First off... I'm not saying that it is NOT possible to make a lot of green right out of college, but it's not likely. Once thing employers are looking for over a college education is experience and certifications. The order almost alwys goes: experience, certifications... and then education.

When you're in college, try to get a job or intern position with a company whose product or service directly relates to the industry that you are attending school for. That will definately pad your resume when applying for a job that you're extremely interested in when you finally graduate from college.

I had the high hopes when I graduated from school in the IS field, but soon found out that my degree doesn't mean jack to an employer unless there is experience involved. Working on computers on my own time and thing similar to that made no difference to any of the companies I tried at. In fact, I put out over 80 applications over a period of 6 months right after I got out of college, and only had 2 bites. The first being a web programming position that I did not get, and the second being the job that I currently have.

IIRC, the average person with just a CCNA (not a college degree) is making ~$35k-50k a year.
 
Remember, certifications mean dick if you can't back them up. From my small time in the industry so far, experience is carrying me farther then any paper cert has or will.

noone is gonna hire someone for a ccna position that doesnt have any exp working w/ cisco equipment. just because u can get the cert doesnt mean u can configure/troubleshoot it when the network is fucked and you got a lot of people on your ass.
