Some scientists feel that our cellular usage is causing havoc with the bee population. To be fair this is one of several options scientists are looking at. This whole situation could also be a very large problem for us.

They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.

Yup, this all started two years ago and coincides with the introduction of the first cell phone in the U.S. Oh, wait, we've had cell phones for over 20 years and every man woman and child under the age of 70 has had a cell phone for the past ten years. What am I saying? Of course it's cell phones! Behind that Rock and Roll music and video games, cell phones are the most evil thing in the world and should be feared and banned. The sky is falling.

I really hate sensationalized junk science. An Amish guy would be able to see how nonsensical this is even though he shuns cellphones. The loss of huge numbers of the bee population is a very serious issue and we already have people exploiting it to promote their crazy ideas. What's next? Are the bees going to be dying because of assault rifles?

I'm not blaming the person who pointed out this article, but rather the people that start up these insane ideas.

To be fair every possibility listed between the three articles that are linked are only theories because honestly no one has an answer yet.

The bees have been reprogrammed and sent to the middleeast for the final battle, they are converging in a secret location awaiting orders to attack....LMAO

I'm going to use my mobile more often, cos I hate being stung by bees. Everyone use their mobile, bees will die and the world as we know it today, will come to an abrupt halt!

That's a load of diversionary crap.
From what I've read the massive bee die-off is due to a class of pesticides that are the same weight and consistency as pollen when distributed over fields.

Technology is the blame for all our ills!! We should go back to living in caves and killing our dinners with our bare hands. Sheesh.

Thie has nothing to do with cells, and everything to do with new pesticides ! There are a large group of chemicals that need to be banned outright.

Good. I hate bees.

Then were would you get some flowers if bees didn't pollinate them.

Well if you look at it in another light, cell phones are killing more than the bee population. Cell phones in cars are more dangerous than a person drunk while driving.

come to think about it....i have seen less and less bees over the past few years??

new form of Bee Flu that one day could eventually take over and wipe out the human population?

Apparently it has gotten so bad that the US started importing bees to compensate for the decline.

Can't they engineer self-pollinating crops for chrissakes?

And for that matter, a polar bear that sheds wouldn't hurt either.

I like bees.

They don't hurt you unless you're stupid with them. :)

Some "perfect plants" have self pollinating flowers. Genetic diversity is served better by cross-pollination.

The bees digestive tract get weakened by genetic crops and dies of a virus.

Then again could be any reason.

A 17 minute double post is pretty impressive.

I have no idea how that happened or how to delete the double. Yes, I feel stupid. In fact, i feel so stupid that i will no longer capitalize "i" when referring to myself.

depends on the bee, honey bees are pretty nice. Hornets/wasps are just nasty

Hornets and wasps are not bees :)

But yeah, Africanized honeybees are naturally quite a bit more aggressive than western/european versions... thanks a lot Brazil you greedy bastards

lol, I PM a [H] front page news mod with a story about the DNC naming a RIAA member as their public relations CEO, and a story about a theory about cellphones killing bees gets posted? I think priorities are messed up somewhere. :p

Well it was one idiot "scientist" that imported African bees to help increase crop yeilds.

But African bees have been in africa all along and the Africans seem to manage, I think we will too.

But being africanized isn't a solution to this situation, the killerbees are dying out equally with european bees.

Sideffect is wasp's and hornets has less competition for food and thier populations are increasing.... and they SUCK. Combined with higher temperatures and warmer winters, wasps have been growing super nests down south. Without winter to kill them off, they just keep building. I saw a picture of an abandoned car that was one GIANT nest.... fking scarey.

And you cant domesticate/control wasps/hornets like you can bees, so they are useless for agriculture.... unless you wanna get all the random mexicans stung.

The solution, at least short term is going to be us. We will all have to raise bees just like we had victory gardens in WWII. We will all have to pitch in and increase the population.

Ive barely seen a bee in about 3 yrs here in MA. Used to be able to count 100-200 on the yard on a summer afternoon..... lots of clover/dandilions oops

If you sent it, I totally missed it. :(

The science side of me always finds this stuff so interesting, and honestly you guys always love to discuss it...even if you are just bashing on it. ;)

Well if by "crop" you mean honey production then yes, they wanted to increase the amount of honey, a "luxurious" commodity (ie it was being exported for high prices), and wanted to get a hybrid bee, unfortunately someone "accidentally" left open a little trap which only allowed smaller bees out, queens were too large to leave, and off they went.

But African bees have been in africa all along and the Africans seem to manage, I think we will too.
Huge difference, you introduce a non-native species and they are going to seriously affect the native species (even if some of them are non-native). Plus look at a google map frrom the tip of South America to I don't know... Canada, now do the same with Africa see any diffference? All that green stuff? That's because there are lots more plants that can be fertilized (aka food) for bees throughout the entire continent, if there was a dead patch of desert between you wouldn't get movement of these insects.

No one said they were.

wasps and hornets don't compete for the same food supply as bees, in fact bees are often the food supply for wasps. The side effect will come when you see apples costing $5 a pound because there were no bees to pollinate the vast majority of fruit orchards.

The solution, at least short term is going to be us. We will all have to raise bees just like we had victory gardens in WWII. We will all have to pitch in and increase the population.
I don't think this will help, if it is in fact cell phones that are at the cause (and I seriously doubt that right now) having bee gardens will simply have more dead bees, not to mention wouldn't want to deal with a potential lawsuit because some lady 4 houses down has bee allergies and got stung. Not to mention you can't get people to stop talking on cell phones when driving in bad weather even if there are laws against it you think they'll talk less because of the bees?? Pfffbt, not a chance

You can't talk about cellphones without some yahoo telling us how we're (US is) way behind all the other first world countries in coverage and options, blah blah. So anyone know if those other countries are seeing the same bee problems?

I really question that concept that a digital signal is going to kill off the bee population. Just for fun I set my 800mhz digital phone and a older 824mhz analog on one of my wifes bee hives. Both phones were on and talking to each other, the bees couldnt have cared less. (note this is not a valid scientific experiment :) The real problem with the loss of the American bee population is the varroa mite.

If cell phones are actually the(an) problem, then we can simply switch over to use a different frequency. Hell we buy new phones so fast the turnover for the whole installed base is measured in months not years.

Be(e) nice to pick a frequency that doesn't bug the bee's (pun central today) and also doesn't maybe possibly have a brain cancer risk.

The cell system sucks ass anyway, time to implement a nice uniform and rational system nationwide rather tha a hodge podge of 20 different companies doing it slightly thier way.

Be(e) nice to get 100% coverage nationwide too, so the phone just works anywhere anytime period. Oh, and make it function on planes without allegedly giving the cell system a heartattack from moving the handset at 500 mph.

It's alot easier to solve this IF its a problem than it is to tackle CO2 production. This is fixable within a year of deciding to change.

Its not the cell phones, its GM crops. In effect, the bees leave the nest and never come back because their intestinal tracts are invaded by parasites. In effect, the bees immune system is destroyed...bee aids.

Yeah it's long been many people's fear that this type of thing will happen. The other problem is that a GM crop in the middle of the US can literally spread pollen in wind currents almost all over the world if the conditions are right just the same as we get all of China's mercury in our air. Hahahaha.

Seriously though, whether it's GM or Cellular signals(the argument that this just started hapenning and we've been using cell phones forever is fucking RETARDED we change frequencies almost entirely every few years based on adaptions of new technologies *thing data transfer) we needs bees!

Fuck GM foods. Dangerous shit, and the complications possible are such a long list it's an unfair uncertainty.

It's already been proven that GM crops infect non GM crops and cross polinate spreading all of their possible problems to non GM.

As an aside these GM crops have been rigged to rob the hell out of poor farmers in third world countries* GS for monsanto and reseeding crops if you want to know bout that.
