Thursday we had told you guys about the ban on phones using Qualcomm chips due to patent violations. Some people are speculating that this might be a short term boost for the iPhone.

"In the near term the benefits to [the] Apple iPhone will be positive," he says. "The ban will force competing carriers to AT&T to rethink plans to introduce enhanced 3G models to compete with the iPhone. If these new models have Qualcomm chipsets, then the carriers will not be able to offer them in the US under the current ban."

Good for AT&T maybe, bad for everybody else. I plan on buying a new phone towards the end of the year but I won't be switching to AT&T, but I probably won't be looking for a 3g phone anyway. Could possibly drive other carriers phone offerings higher in price because of them having to do extra R&D just to offer a competing product.

Bummer I was looking to get a new 3g phone too but I wasn't planning on paying $500.00 for a Iphone or even $399.00 with a two year Verizon contract for a Iphone that's just ridiculous.

hehehe... employee discount FTW. I got my blackjack for $150. And no I won't get a Iphone.

What a BS patent! How can you patent something as basic as turning off a chip when it isn’t needed? I hope this ruling gets overturned. I really see no-one other than Broadcom and Apple benefiting from this…. Certainly not consumers.

We are in desperate need of serious reforms to our patent system.

I convinced our Assistant Superintendent to go with Windows Mobile based phones to replace her palm and integrate with Exchange Server 2007 which we're rolling out this summer. The models we looked at seem to be unavailable now :(
