Cell Processor: “Dead In The Water”

Maybe it is my age, but had an Atari and a NES and I just don't remember having the problems we have now. The only time I can remember a frame dip is when you were killed as megaman but by that point you are already dead.

You never played Contra, Gradius, Lifeforce, or basically any shooter?

Well the is the Spurs engine. Also it is used in some dedicated hardware encoding/decoding video cards.

The change in direction is because the version with 32 SPE’s was not viable and they will pursue less ambition designs. They may stick to the current formula of 1 PPE and 8 SPE’s. They may look at further process shrinks, minor clock speed increase, improving the PPE, changing memory or I/O interfaces, increasing cache, multi-chip to increase performance per socket. Power consumption increased too much for small increases to clock speed on 90nm and 65nm. 45nm or better may allow for increasing clock speed or increasing processing resources.

The CPU in PS3 has already been replaced by the PoweXCell 8i. The major upgrade was to increase the width of the single-precision FP units in the SPE's to accelerate Double-Precision floating-point (DP FP). The PoweXCell 8i was designed for HPTC servers such as the pairing with AMD Opteron blades as a supercomputer.

Why would they want DP support for PS4? What could possibly be the benefit of that.
