Hey, I'm thinking about building a basic computer, probably going to run linux on it, don't need it to be anything fancy. Celerons are cheap. Are they that horrible, or are they useable?

Celerons are fine. How much you looking to spend though. I've been getting dell like 3100s or something like that for cleints for like 460 shipped with a 3ghz p4, gig of ram, combo drive, like 80 gig hd and a 17 inch lcd. Would be a great linux box. Only issue is no x16 pci express slot. Just a 1 x and pci or your stuck with onboard intel. If you are not running any 3d stuff it would be fine though and pretty cheap.

If you want to throw something together also look at buying a p4 from the forums or a cheap 64 bit amd chip.
 
well, It's kinda up in the air right now.. my mobo that I have in right now is dieing, and I want to get something equal to, or greater than what I have. I have an AGP graphics card, that I really don't want to have to upgrade. I'm in that awkward point where the only easy upgrade is to just get new everything, and it sucks, because I can't afford that.

so basically.. I was thinking about trying out a pentium system, since I haven't in many years, but it seems like it's going to cost me to get anything good.

if I replace the system that I have now, I probably wont be running linux on it, but i'd watn to have enough to at least play CS:S
 
Newer celerons are CHEAP. (but surprisingly good)

something in the 3.06 range should be plenty.

Newer semprons are also really cheap, sometimes falling in the same price range.
 
i have this set up and it work fine to me,

celeron 1.8ghz northwood socket478
gf fx5200 128 mb
asus p4pe mobo i845pe chipset
450watts psu


at this time most celeron are lga775
