Celeron vs. Pentium Processors

Ok, my friend is building a computer, and while i'm fairly knowledgable about most computer components, processsors I'm pretty iffy on. He wants to buy a 2.5 Ghz. Celeron processor, because for that price, he could only get a 1.8 Ghz Pentium 4. The Penitium 4 has a 400 MHz FSB and a 512 K cache, while the Celeron has a 400 MHz FSB and a 125 K cache.

I'm not really sure which one would be better, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

um, if he's debating between a celeron 2.5 or a P4 1.8a for a new computer, then maybe he should consider going amd.

Depends on what's he's using it for. If it's for a family computer (read: word processing, Internet, and playing - not making or editing - movies/music) then the Celeron should be fine. If not, then you may want to take snowwie's advice.

If he really wants an Intel processor, though, I suggest waiting until you can buy a 2 gig or higher P4B or P4C. (The P4B has a 533MHz FSB and the P4C has an 800MHz FSB, making them faster than the two selections you chose.) If you can wait, you can get up to a 2.8GHz processor for around $200.

He should just run the 1.8 on the 400fsb. If he's cocky then he could try for 2.4GHz on the 533fsb. Its fine for doing anything and everything, plus its better than a Celeron 2.5 for games.

Unless you crank the celeron up also.

Well i remember reading somewhere that the Celeron scales like shit - Anyway the 1.8A would be faster in most applications.

Also remember that nearly all recent 1.8a will run at 2.4b by changing fsb to 133 and no voltage hike :) At 2.4, the celeron wouldn't touch it

celerons are horrible performers, and this is coming from an intel guy.....my laptop has a athlon 2400 xp-m in it and it can match the performance of a celeron at 3.2~ghz. as said before, if price is an issue with him, tell him to get either a amd 2500 (or mobile 2400/2500) or intel 2.4 or 2.6c

The celeron is not suitable for a primary gaming system.

My Celeron 2.4@3.16 (i865 DCDDR@175mhz, 270fps q3) cannot keep up with my P4B 2.66@stock (i875 DCDDR@167mhz, 300fps q3). However, as a machine with a primary purpose of encoding dvds and acting as a TIVO it suits it just fine. It also plays halo without a hiccup at default settings(see encoder rig in sig).

those Q3 numbers only show a 10% difference.

I'd hardly call that sucking.

Now admittedly that's almost a 600MHz difference as well...

It still CAN play games, just not as fast as a pentium 4...

People make it out like the celeron pulls 3 frames a second in q3 or something.

A Celeron plus a good 865/875 Motherboard offers a better upgrade path than a low cost AMD system. You can pop a high-end Northwood or a Prescott in there later on. Talk him into an 865/875 mobo.

I can score 14.5k in 3dmark with my Celeron rig. So it's playable 3.6ghz celeron. 9800 pro.

They are not as bad as the old celerons of way back.

I also have one in My Shuttle box. Stable runs fine And encodes divx like a champ.

Yeah, but I score 14.9k in 3dmark with my p4 3.12 (2.4c) with a Ti4600

But then i can score 24.5k with my P4 system. Im comparing a celeron 3dmark.

and swiching to a $50 amd 1700 OC'd i can get 20.1 k in 3dmark.

I have a 3.06 Oc'ed to 3.45 and I can't even get 3DMark 2K1 to run at all. Gives me errors about my video drivers not being DX8.1 compatible.

Well I got 3dMark to run. It upgraded to build 330 or whatever the hell the newer one is. I guess I haven't run it since it first came out with the SE version. I get like 13K

If you are looking at systems like this, and asking questions like this, please, oh please go to www.dell.com and get yourself a new computer. It will be cheaper, probably more reliable and will come with a warranty.

Yep

You're better off going for a Duron and saving the $$$ for other system components IMO.

That's pretty funny, and I actually give this advice sometimes. In this case, it's always good to remember two things: current celerwoods are like castrated Willamettes, and that the idea of the celeron is that it's like a pentium but with one nut cut off- as noting the previous example, it appears they missed and cut both off.
I can't recommend an AXP system anymore- there's no point, and no upgrade path. i865/i875 will give you an upgrade path, can be found on the cheap, and you can run a cheapass (cheap as you can afford) P4B in it. Then you can upgrade to a P4C or P4E later on.

i wouldnt say duron, id just get an athlon xp, the 2500's are under 100$ and if he's ever tempted he can overclock the piss out of it
