Ok I've got a friend in the market for a laptop... I showed him the deal of the day... $399 laptop from Dell. And he's like "HELL NO, its a Celeron!!"

I tried to convince him for a few minutes. That its a Celeron M which is fast, has 1Mb of L2, etc... But he's got this shit brick stuck in his brain that Celeron = crap.

All he does is some simple web development, use Adobe Photoshop, etc... he doesn't do print stuff with high resolution where he would need tons of ram. He thinks he CAN'T run Adobe Photoshop & MS .Net on any Celeron. (please correct him)
I told him to upgrade to 512Mb and that laptop would be perfect for him.

I told him old celeron's were crappy. However, new Celeron D's were respectable. And a Celeron M is FAST. He's so dumb he'd rather have a Pentium3 than any Celeron. (b/c his simple mind pentium > celeron) Please vote to let him know what an idiot he is. LOL I'll show him the poll after I get a lot of votes.

P.S. he doesn't game... and wants something portable too.
... though gaming on a laptop isn't really doable unless its like 10lbs and $2000+++

P.P.S please post why you voted your way.... especially if you voted no, tell my why.

P.P.S.S. He has a crappy Dell 2400 (I think thats the model #). like 2.4Ghz 400Mhz Pentium 4 with integrated video as his primary PC and he's perfectly happy with the performance on that.

Well the Celeron M is exactly same as the old Bania Pentium M's minus their powermizer features. It doesn't sound like he would miss the extra cache, the only question is will he be using the laptop on battery often?

I voted yes by the way, although I'm biased because my first gaming machine was a Celeron 300A overclocked to 450mhz back in the day. Nothing like matching the king of the times, the P2 450mhz for a fraction of the cost.

All of the celerons for laptops (celeron M, mobile celeron) are good CPUs.... especially when you put them in a desktop and OC the hell out of them!

voted yes because for the price, 399, he cant really go wrong, and its basically a Dothan with 1/2 the cache. he wont get that much of a penalty from that, maybe 2-5%, and if hes not gaming, he wont even know the difference.

well only thing stopping me from getting a C-M is not having all the power features

I mean Taking that from it really doesnt make sense

Well it does to them forcing you to P-M

He would probably rarely use it on battery power. It would be to bring from location A to location B & plug in at either place. He has a desktop already as his primary PC. Also, he's cheap. Which doesn't make sense b/c he uses his computers 24/7 so you would think he would invest in his occupation, etc..

He's not concerned with battery performance.

His concern is... that he thinks Celerons = crap and he won't be able to run Adobe Photoshop CS with any Celeron.

I should have made the poll....
Can you run Adobe Photoshop CS with this Celeron M laptop.... b/c thats his concern.... and obviously I have some fools in here that just like to vote no celeron sucks with out a reason.

Here's what I run on my Celeron D340 while working on my webs:

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe GoLive
About 2 or 3 IE browser windows
Windows Media 10 playing an MP3

ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

You just have to have enough ram. I use 1gig of PC3200.

Edit: Hell, I can even run Photoshop on my P3 850 with 512mb ram. :p

There's that whole budge CPU stigma applied to celerons and durons and semprons and everything. people seem to think that it's garbage hardware because it's the "BUDGET" version of the bigger items. I, personally, have no problem with a Celeron M. Those sorts of misconceptions are a bit depressing to me.

I've got two Celeron-Ms(1.3GHz) running alongside a Pentium-M 1.6GHz. At the same speed(overclocked to 2.1GHz), the P-M isn't noticeably faster. In fact, for some apps the higher bus speed of the overclocked Celeron(160 vs. 133) makes it faster than the P-M.

The Celeron-M is more than capable of running pretty much anything thrown at it.

notice, the "No" votes don't give any reason to support their choice.....

Just dumb.... misconception voting, like my hardware noob friend.

Are you kidding? $399.00 for a celeron laptop . Damn.

I just about knocked my coffey over when I read that. You would have to me mis-informed, out of date, or a fucking retard to not realize how sahweet that deal is.

My 600Mhz celeron toshiba with its suck-ass 800x600 resolution that had a slower response time than a slug, 4 gig hard drive, and 64 megs of ram was selling for around 200 on ebay earlier this year.

399 for any modern laptop is a hell of a deal.

I had a 366Mhz back in the day. My brothers PII-400 with the 440bx chipset took a dump and died, so I O/Ced that board to 400-something, stuck in 192 megs of ram, and a geforce 2 GTS. That thing actually plated GTA vice city pretty good, warcraft III, image editing in gimp, ripping and watching Dvds. (of course in vice city it would lag like a bitch if you were hauling ass in a fast car).

My 600Mhz laptop was peppeir than my K7-500 with 384 megs of ram in windows 98 for desktop stuff. Although it only had 64mb of ram, it was fast for stuff like internet, ms word, and I was watching southpark on that thing just fine.

if that $399.00 laptop has even the wimpiest celeron of today in it, (and if I had 400 to blow on a laptop) I would leap over my chair right now, and order that thing.

FYI, our cheapass school had a few celeron, apple G3's, and athlon XP 2200 systems for adobe photoshop only. With classes of only 50 minutes long, saving your work and getting it in on time was only a matter of minutes untill the bell rang. Unless you were working with a huge ass image with a lot of layers, the celery-stick systems were fine by me.

The only thing I wouldn't want a celeron system for is gaming or video editing. But aside from that, and considering the low cost of celerons, they roxorz the soxxors... Man oh man do I wish I had a cheapo celeron laptop to look at bewbs/surf the hardforum in bed while whatching tv. Not these dang waffle irons... er... AMDs... Im an amd fan, but not a fan of waffle iron laptops.

(a side note)
It gets down to about 25F at night. Its pushing 90F in here, its around 40 outside, and I only have one damn amd computer on.

You probably needed more ram, than anything.

I noticed back when I was working on these high resolution images from a profession photographer on my work computer and when I upgraded from 256Mb to 512Mb it made a HUGE difference.

The subsequent ram upgrades since then (on home computer):
512 to 1Gb - not very noticeable on most apps (some things were faster)
1Gb to 2Gb - only noticeable on Battlefield 2

Yeah, they were making a lot of hard drive noise while working with big images. Some only had 128mb of ram and were running win2k. Even so, they were ... hmm.. whats the word... snappy? Click and do something, and it gets done.

I dunno. I have 1 gig of ram in A64 system here for gimp/video work/games. Battefield 2 was using around 1.7 gigs of ram (counting the page file), farcry seemed hungry.

I keep running out of ram. I guess having 10 tons of shit open at once means that 1 gig of ram isnt enough. Hell, it wasnt that long ago where my commodore 64 could do a bunch of stuff with only 64k of ram. I remember upgrading from 2MB to 8MB of ram in my 486 leading edge.

Sigh...

I voted yes, not much of a difference...

QFT x2

the celeron M is a fine little chip, but i wouldnt get one cuase i care about battery life too much. id actually caution to say my p3-m gets better battery life than a celeron M would. the entire system consumes about 11w of power when im only taking notes with the screen turned down :)

i still said taht he should get it in the poll.

This has recently happened with a friend of mine.. he wanted advice for getting a cheap laptop and I told him a Celeron M 1.4 is more than enough for browsing the web and using Word... maybe IM or a divx video :)

Damn right! I've got a Celeron M 350J 1.3GHz that overclocks by 1.1GHz to a total of 2.4GHz on air and stock volts......

Dotheron_2.4.PNG

Not bad for a chip that cost me $25. :D

Nice, can't wait for the desktop chips to come out in a few years.

A question for you coz, what motherboard are you using to get those clocks? Are there any 479 motherboards that will take an aftermarket cooler? I hear most of the mounting holes are in whack places so ppl are stuck with the small HSF that the manufacturer supplies. Thx.

fuck me what does that compare to? Done any benchmarks?
I didn't run many benchmarks but I took out the Celery-M+CT-479 and put in a Pentium 4 2.0GHz Northwood for comparison....

Asus P4P800SE, CT-479 Adapter, 512MB DCDDR, NV FX 5600XT (urrghh)

Northwood 2.0GHz
3DMark 2001 (800x600x32, SW T&L) - 4507
Sandra CPU Test - 5057 MIPS, 1468 FPU MFLOPS

Celery-M @ 2.4GHz
3DMark 2001 (800x600x32, SW T&L) - 7799
Sandra CPU Test - 9388 MIPS, 3339 FPU MFLOPS

Yeah, the extra FSB speed, cache and CPU clock helps but it's still no contest between P4 and Celery-M. :)

celeron M is nothing but a banias, look up how a banias runs thats how a celeron M runs

I'm not Coz, but he won't say anything if I answer this. He better not, I sold him his Dotherons. :D

All the 479 boards can take aftermarket coolers, but it will take some tweaking. The AOpen i855 board uses a standard P4 heatsink bracket, but to use most P4 heatsinks it needs to be modified because the P-M/C-M has no IHS. As a result, a non-modded bracket keeps the heatsink from touching the core. Shave around 3mm off each leg and they fit quite well.

The DFI i855 and AOpen i915 boards SHOULD be able to use most northbridge chipset coolers. They all have mounting holes through the board, and I know the DFI and Aopen full-ATX board holes are within the adjustment range of most chipset coolers. That might not be enough for some people, but it will still offer an improvement over the stock aluminum heatsinks included with those boards.

That's not completely accurate. The newer Celeron M chips use Dothan cores with half the L2 cache disabled. The Dothan core has several enhancements over Banias that may improve performance even with equal cache size.

Asus P4P800SE with CT-479 adapter. The P4P800SE allows vcore adjustment up to 1.60v, 2.8v for the RAM, fixed AGP/PCI, FSB adjust up to 400MHz..... all the goodies you need for decent overclocking. There's a great thread on Dothan + CT-479 overclocking here, it's got a ton of great info and links to overclocking tools n' stuff.

As far as 'native' s479 motherboards go, ask Widefault - he's the expert there. :)

excuse me people celerons today are the worse processors ever invented, a new 2.5ghz celeron made today is worse than my 533 celeron that i bought back in the 90s.

We're not talking about the lacklustre P4-derived Celeron with 128KB and 256KB L2 cache. We're talking about the Dothan-derived Celeron with 1MB of L2 cache which has excellent performance. :)

oc'ed delerons are no slouch either, at 4.5 ghz 512kb cache gets decent performance ;)

Don't you mean 256KB L2 for the Celeron D? I think the only Celeron out there with 512KB L2 cache is the Banias-derived Celeron M. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

im prob wrong, either way 4.5 ghz with either ammount of cache performs nicely, you just need to compensate for cache with clocks

I voted YES...I dont have a Celeron M , but I do have a D in my Dell box at work.....Its the 2.53/533 Celeron ..That thing is absolutley every bit as fast as regular Pentuim in ANYTHING but games...Which I dont play on that machine.....So yeah, get the Celeron ...save a few bucks and add some ram, you'll never know the difference....

the celeron m is fine, I say buy it for him and change the sticked, he'll never notice the difference ;)
