I'm having a flaming crapload of trouble with the Cel M in my Toshiba Satellite M45-S165

I know nothing about upgrading CPUs at all. I'd like to upgrade to a slightly faster CPU.

I currently have a Celeron M 370 1.5 gHz (400 FSB)

What Can I go up to, what cpu do i buy.



PLEASE HELP A PATHETIC NEWBIE OUT!!!

You really need to know what your chipset is and if it supports 533FSB. If it does then most P-M chips should do. Otherwise find a good 400FSB P-M like a 745 or something and go with that.
 
all of a sudden and all at once (I mean Wednesday it is fine and running like clockwork, Thursday it sucks outloud) , the machine started to bog down. A full restart takes several min, apps run like flaming garbage, music/movies play choppy and slow.

I ran a full scan for viri and spyware, did a "Last known good" and a full sysetm restore to the day before the problem arose. nothing helped.

I upgraded the RAM from 512 to a gig and tested for a day or so with little improvment.

I let Perfmon run for a 1/2 hour to see the state of the processor.

It was pinned at about 45% for Most of the 30 min.

I took the case apart and checked the cpu to make sure it wasn't mis-seated and the heatsink was ok. All was fine.

I don't know what else to do.
 
go into the process tab and find out waht is taking up all that CPU time, first off..
 
what you're describing certainly isn't the cpu's fault. It's a software problem. Have you done a full virus and spyware scan? How many processes are running when the machine is at idle?
 
virus scans and spyware scans ran clean. no issues.

When Idle, there are 52 processes running. But nothing has changed since the machine was running fine.

As I type this (with my Browser, Maxthon, open)

23,940K for SVCHOST
17,872K for EXPLORER
14,600K for CCAPP
13,816K for gcasDtServ
12,616K for Maxthon

6300 for msmsgs (which i cannot kill no matter how many times i END PROCESS)

so on and so forth...


I disabled all Startup processes in MSCONFIG and rebooted a couple of times...no good

I uninstalled all crap software that i'm not using (NERO, AOL, old games, etc)

I was juct checking the machine again and booted it in safe mode. Excellent response time. ok...now i just have to track down the culprit....this should be fun.

I really appreciate the help folks...I am so lost right now
 
I have the same cpu in my Acer and i have no probs at all, i would say you have an underlying issue that needs to be sorted ;)
