Celeron D340 replacement

My wife has a HP/Compaq that she really likes, it has the Celeron D340 2.93 cpu, I've bumped the ram to 1gb, it has no AGP or PCI-E ports, just regular PCI slots, but she is attached to it, otherwise I'd rebuild with a cheap 939 or something. But anyway....

I'd like to bump the speed of the proc. The Celeron's 1m SuperPi time was terrible, compared to even a 2.4B Intel system. What Pentium would replace it? I *ought* to know this, but rather than guess, and mess up her work system, I thought I could ask here, someone more familiar with the Intels could help me. I've been in AMD land the past few, and haven't kept up w/Intel stuff.
Barring BIOS limitations, what Pentium could I reasonably expect to work in place of her current Celeron ?
Thanks,
jp

thats what i dont know. 775 or 478. I cant tell if Intel made D340 in both or not. Its a bit embarrasing to have to ask this because I should know this- so elementary. But I dont know the socket. I have Everest installed, and I'll check it in a minute, IIRC the mobo is a 845 chipset. thanks again for the responses. :)

in Everest, under CPUID, Platform ID is socket 478. Under CPU, it says type Celeron D340, 2.93ghz, and under CPU Alias, it says Prescott-256.

Does this mean I can drop in any socket 478 Pentium, or does it have to be Prescott core, or does that make a difference? Something like a Northwood, a 2.8C, or ??

Thanks for the help.

Any 478 chip should work. I'd get a Northwood 3.0C or something, that should be more than enough.
