celeron D vs. p4 505

So im looking at building a small form factor comp for my girlfriend. It will mainly be used for websurfing, ms office, etc.. So heres my question, with a difference of $16 what will be the performance difference between these two processors?

Have you considered a Sempron64 socket 754 chip, it would likely cost the same but perform better and be cooler.

Yea I thought about the 3100+ sempron and I would go with that but it is socket 754. Which doesnt give me much upgradibility with 754 dying off. I did hear some rumors about the sempron 64's coming to socket 939. In fact HP is selling some computers with them in them. Does anyone know anything about them beoming available for sale?

I think both would be pretty close. Almost 300MHz higher speed at the same bus speed for both evens it out. Some things using heavy SSE1/2 (e.g. encoding) will be faster on the Celeron due to the higher clock speed.

I don't see any direct comparisons, but this is a P4 2.8GHz (800MHz FSB) vs a Celeron D 340: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/print/celeron-d.html

She's not gaming is she? Upgradeability is not an issue. By the time she will need to upgrade Skt 755 will be long gone. And besides, the Intel chips she could pontentally upgrade to are way overpriced.

If you do decide to go with the 505 P4, don't...get the 506 instead...adds 64-bit (EM64T) support.

The Sempron 3100+ is a better choice for a SFF system. It runs 22W cooler than the P4 and Celerons discussed above. Undervolt it and it will run even cooler.

Well for gaming the Sempron would be better. For overall performance though a P4 with HT would be better.

So back to the original question, I would go with this Pentium 4 506 with HT, and overclock it to 3Ghz+. Around 3Ghz + depending on the cooling in the SFF, should give nice performance and smooth multi-tasking performance which the Sempron won't be quite as good at.

Definitely get the AMD... OCing tends to be hands on and quite involved, you don't want to give someone an OCed machine if you're not always gonna be around to fix it... Get something that will run cooler and a little better @ stock & stable

Well DAMN NEWEGG says it does!!

I thought the 3.06Ghz was the only 533 P4 with HT, but newegg said the 506 did, so I thought maybe the new 5_6's must have it.

The celeron has a high clock speed and the P4 has more cache, although p4 clock speed is lower it still pwn the celeron, the P4 has HT which make things alot snappier, i would say it worths the extra $16

This P4 doesn't have HT, thus it not only lacks clockspeed, it also lacks multitasking, the only redeeming feature of the P4.

Not the only, but definitely the main thing I would want for any system. (multitasking)

Intel needs to make their Celerons basically the 5_1 series, and the P4's the 600/800 series.

IE: Celeron should have 1Mb, HT, 64-bit, 800FSB

HT is far more valuable than EMT64

That's a great idea... she likely won't even notice any difference in performance, but you can bet she'll complain if its noisy... (God forbid we build them free computers... just gotta complain...)
