I just put a budget system together for the old man (celeron D 3.06ghz) and the chip is sometimes reaching 65C on full load. The heatsink and fan are seated properly.......

Do some celerons run hotter than the others?

On the chip it says:

Intel 04'
3.06ghz/256/533
SL7NX Costa Rica
3544B028

4544C475
0850

Thanks,

Foz

even if some did run hotter than usual, that's hotter than hotter than usual.

double checked the surface of the heat sink? and the processor while you're at it.... never fun to find that the protective plastic is still sitting on the thermal pad, or worse... you pulled off the protective covering not realizing it was intel's rediculous thermal tape.

I did take off the heatsink and fan, and the chip was stuck to the heatsink really bad. Like it came right off when i pulled the HSF off, without me lifting the lever to release the cpu.... Anyways I put it all back together and now temps are a little lower... around 40-45 idle, and 50-60 on load... is this safe enough to leave it? Think I should go buy some thermal paste tomorrow and apply that?

My 775 HTPC runs a Celeron D 325J, and Ive had a few 478 Delerons too. They all run very warm upwards of 55-60C. The prescott core is a real smoker. This is with a 92mm vantec strealth on the OEM hs/f. I have an exos layin around I may throw on it for fun.

well, i assume there was some sort of thermal sealing material on the heat sink if it pulled out of the socket. that happens all the time to me, it's from the vacume seal adhesive quality the thermal conductive material tends to have under the pressure the heat sink clamps provide.

you could try to put some different paste on it, but if this is the stock heat sink and fan i'm be curious as to the internal case temps and whether or not the fan was blowing on the heat sink. if you do end up getting some paste, make sure you clean off the heat sink before applying it.

otherwise, if it's running 60C at load, that shouldn't hurt it, but you might want to check to see if this is caused by incorrect readings (bios update possibly) or something else overlooked in the case, airflow and heatsink installation.

edit- of course there is the aformentioned fact that, ahem, prescott cores run hot.

thanks for the input, as for case temps, these were the readings with the side panel off of it. I just installed a 80mm exhaust fan in the rear in hopes of dropping it a couple degrees. I'll just keep my eye on it for now and decide what to do later.
