Celeron D overclocking...

Anyone tried this?

I went for the soyo freebie motherboard that newegg had up over labor day weekend, and I snagged the cheapest cpu I could get for it (celeron D $78 at 2.4ghz). How high should I be able to overclock it? I'm thinking of sticking in PC2700 ram and just moving the FSB from 133 -> 166. This should get me 3ghz to start. How would this compare with a Northwood in gaming?

Rob

I've had 3 Celeron D 2.4G CPUs (building for other people), and the maximum stable OC I've gotten from these has been around 3.1G (stock fan, 1.4V, fsb about 170+) Temps were about 39degrees idle, and about 49 degrees under load (Prime95)

All easily OCd to about 3.0G (or just below with fsb 166) At 3.24G, they all failed Prime95)

A better Celeron D bet is the 2.66G. This easily OCd to 3.6G, stock fan, 1.4375V Temps 41 idle & 51degrees under load.

i OC'd a 2.53 easily to 3.2 buy upping the FSB from 133 to 166

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for converting"celeron D" to "p4-prescott" speeds?

Rob

Celery's are decent overclockers. Thanks to their lowerd FSB frequencies it's no big deal on a 800MHz FSB capable board to crank up the MHz on those suckers. I've got a 2.5 that runs at 3.0GHz with stock cooling. Runs like a champ.

However that whole lack of cache thing gives it less than ideal performance when compared to a Pentium 4 of lesser speed.

Sandra benches show mine overclocked to 3ghz performing like a 2.5-2.66 p4-b

Haven't tried any games yet (gef4mx440 in this box)

I plan on getting a 2.53GHz Celeron-D and kicking up the bus speed to 200MHz. 3.8GHz baby! :p

That might be a bit opimistic unless you crank the voltage up quite high and have some SERIOUS cooling....
As I said before, the 2.4G Celeron Ds I've had top out at about 3.1G(+30%), while the 2.66 topped out at 3.6G(+35%)
If you extrapolate that, you might expect around 3.3 - 3.4G from a 2.53G.

I also have a Prescott 2.4A, which overclocks to 3.4G(about 42%)

The guys at X-bit Labs certainly did not have much of a problem. And this guy for sure did not have a problem. Hay I am just going to try, I will be happy if it works and happy if it does not.

You need to read what I said..... I said the 2.4G didn't OC as much as the 2.66G......

The Xbit labs tests were done using 2.66G & 2.8G Celeron D. You said you have a 2.4G, which Xbit DIDN'T test, so there is no way to tell how well they would have gone with a 2.4G.
A 2.53G might be better, but I haven't been able to get any Celeron D up to fsb 200M.
I haven't seen any 2.53G Celeron Ds yet........

Good Luck ;)

hey rob, let me know how well that mobo OCs. I picked one up also from newegg while it was on the free after rebate sale, and I'm dying to get some cheapo components and OC the hell out of everything. I'm trying to decide between the celeron d 2.4(or higher) or the Pentium 4 2.26 processors, so I'd like to see the OCd performance of the celeron d.
