This is my major upgrade/downgrade/sidegrade in two years, so I thought I'd share my overclocking experiences.
New system is an Asus P5LD2-VM, Celeron D 331 (2.66Ghz) stock cooling, OCZ 1GB DDR2 Gold dual channel, eVGA 6800GS, Seagate 7200.8 SATA, Soundblaster 2zs oem, and a Hauppuage Win-TV go - All inside an Antec Aria, with the included 300 watt powersupply
My first attempt at an overclock netted me up to 149Mhz FSB (default is 133Mhz) At 150Mhz, the system refused to boot up at all. No voltage or memory tweaks anywhere would help, I was perplexed and a little bit angry
After a couple of days of troubleshooting at being disappointed at the low overclock, I came to realize that the PCI-E bus does not like to be underclocked (which was what was automatically happening when hitting the 150Mhz+ FSB speed on this mobo) After forcing the PCI-E to 133Mhz the CPU FSB seemed limitless.
But... I quickly noticed that the SATA drive did not recognize at any PCI-E speed above 120Mhz. So I settled on 118Mhz PCI-E, which with further testing allowed me to overclock the FSB to 173Mhz (3.46Ghz) and the memory at DDR2-692Mhz Cas 4-4-4-12.
Feeling happier about the overclock I left it at this for several days. But soon I wanted more. The stock HS/Fan was getting a little noisy, and I noticed that the Asus BIOS settings allows undervolting the processor, so my journey began dropping the Voltage from 1.400Volts... Several hours of careful testing later (eating dinner while watching memtest mostly) it dropped all the way to 1.2875 Volts with stability
She gets 5500 in 3Dmark05. Moral of the story is don't give up, things can always be better.
