I just brought a busted PC home. bad mobo, bad PSU. Good hdd, RAM, modem, CPU, DVD/CDRW drive.

I have 2 P4 systems right now, a 2.8ghz that is acting as my primary server, and a 2.26ghz acting as my download box. Both are Optiplex GX270s, the 2.8 being the normal size, the 2.26 the small form factor

The question is, is the Celeron D 325 faster than the 2.26ghz P4?
The -D is of course a Prescott core.
Both have a 533mhz FSB.
The Celeron D has a 266mhz speed advantage, but half the cache of the 2.26ghz P4.

In all honesty, my systems would be fine with a Celeron. And, if ebay is to be believed, I could sell off my 2.8ghz w/ heatsink for $40+, which would certainly be worth the drop in performance for a system that only gets remotely logged into maybe once a month for updates, and is otherwise simply network storage.

So, I'm looking into selling my 2.8ghz...but I'm not sure which CPU to put in my primary server. (All it does is file serving, in all honesty, but it may also host a virtual machine as well. At any rate, RAM is of more importance to me in this endeavor than processor).

if all the system is going be doing is server work, then i would say go for it. i mean cellys are not bad chips, they are just pentiums without the cooler shiney stuff. lol. but yeah dude, go for it. i mean like you said, gets use maybe once a month. should run fine. :D
