I picked up a Dell inspiron from Walmart today for $398 for my mom. It has an Intel Celeron 900 @ 2.2GHz with 3GB RAM.

The thing seems to be pretty chipper so far, I killed Vista and put XP on it to help. A friend seems to think Celerons are still crappy and I really haven't looked lately.

It's not going to be used for anything hard core but I think it was a good deal, no?

Obviously, he was trying to tell me that nothing centrino or core duo or less is any good but I think for what it's being used for + the price?

Internet? Email? Word processing? More than enough.

It seems the newer Celerons are better than the Pentium-M processors so that is a plus (clock for clock). I think the main disadvantage of the Celerons is the lack of SpeedStep so it may hamper battery life, if that matters to you.

Meh. My workstation at work is a Dell P4 2.0 with 1GB of ram (DDR 266). I have OSX86 on it, works like a champ.
