Well, I tried moving the units to my main unit and they worked like a charm. Swapped cables, no change in the backup.

So, I reformatted and reinstalled WinXP. and VOILA'!, it's working fine again.... guess some obscure windows file got corrupted or deleted by accident. Don't know, but it's fixed.
