this seem a little wack? I have way older CDs, plus the fact of the HD storage....he suggests that standard HDs suck because of their bearings, which is true, this happens when the bearings wear out, tolerances are lost, and precision in turn, but my problem is, he suggests to get a 7200rpm over 5400 for long life, all things being equal(bearing quality, material, etc) the 5400 would last way longer as it spins at less RPM and is less wear and tear on the bearings....... :confused:
 
just because you have older CD's that work does not mean that they do not degenerate rather quickly. I was made aware of the 'short' lifespan of CD-R's a couple of years ago when the C't magazine ran an article about it. I would alway recommend to 'refresh' CD backups every 2-3 years.

while I recommend it, I do not practise it, however I seldom need data from my CDs anymore if I have not used them in a couple of years.
 
His assumption is that everything is *not* equal...that 7200 rpm drives have higher-quality bearings, and will thus last longer, despite the higher stresses involved.

The "2 to 5 year" lifespan seems a little exaggerated, but not unduly so. All my CDR-s seem to show problems after about 5-7 years.

I find this highly untrue. For one, alot of these manufacturers use the same bearings for the enrite platform of drives. They may offer 20 drivers with varying speeds, standards, and sizes, but the end point is, they probably use the same bearings?

Take cars for example, the cavilar and the corvette differ is 10's of thousands, yet they use the exact same brand(and system) of main bearings which GM has always used.

Since I already made a lengthy reply in the other thread I'll keep this short. Optical disc decay is low enough that you can get a lot of your burned discs to last a long time, far longer than that estimated five year mark. Conversely the risk is high enough that you don't want to bet the farm on it.
