Howdy,

I looked but could not find any forums on CD-ROMs. I am wondering which ones are good now a days, it seems rather hard to find decent reviews on CD-ROMs now a days, no idea why. And when i say CD-ROMS I do mean Burners, and DVD-Burners as well. Anyways, I am looking for some help on which DVD/CD-burner to buy for my girlfriend who seems to have the worse luck with Brands like Sony, and LIte-On.

I would like a few brand names say under $100 dollars of decent-to-good DVD/CD-burners.

Thanks!

Well they aren't called CD-ROMs then. The ROM stands for Read-Only Memory, which refers specifically to the actual disc with data on it.

Some good brands for burners are (in no particular order):

Lite-On
Samsung
Memorex
Sony
NEC (NEC 3550)
Pioneer

There's an optical drive forum under the Storage sub-forum.

Anyway, for a good all around DVD burner, take a look at the NEC 3550A, which is something like $35 - 40 right now at places at Newegg and Zipzoomfly.

Cheap and excellent, which is always good.

Yes, the NEC is usually the best bang for the buck :D The Pioneer is also a good pick if you cannot get the NEC.

Thanks folks. I'm gona try the NEC. Wish us luck!! =D

Personally I use plextor, but she didn't want to spend top dollar for one.

Plextor is good stuff, but the $40 burners are excellent, seriously. I have this 2 year old 8x NEC 2500 that burns like a champ, great quality. You don't need to pay top dollar for great quality.

You can also check out www.cdfreaks.com for some reviews, or hit up their forums to really see some fanatics go really in-depth about burners.

Have fun.

plextor FWIH has gone way downhill

i used to hark plexxy too, terrible reviews nowadays

NEC and LiteOn

I'll have to go with Techhead. BenQ 1650 is one of the best drives "out of the box"

However, I feel the 1655 is a tad bit better, but perhaps not worth the extra $10 for the 1-2% scan quality difference and lightscribe.

I've got 2 1655's and 1 1650 so far, all three are fantastic.

When I bought 'em, the 1650's were $41 shipped from 'egg.
