Alright guys, I have an idea to lower, and then raise thing using the motor off of a CD Rom, anyone know how these things work?

oooo im not sure. try googling cd rom motor specs or somthing like that.

You are correct. They are stepper motors and require stepper controller to function. The controllers tell the motor what speed and how far to travel (RPM's). If you see a motor with more than two wires going to it, more than likely it's a stepper motor. You'd be better off using servos, if possible.

I was planning on leaving the CD Rom intact, just using it to "open" and "close" stuff. Just won't be reading CD's.

Was planning on running a little "control" pannel on it w/switches for a mod I'm doing.

Hmm...I'm confused. Do you mean the motor for opening the tray or the motor that actually spins the CD itself?

*applies extra power to motor*

*cd tray flies out*

*thump*

OW FUCK, MY BALLS!....
