cd explodes in cdrom drive?

i have a pretty much brand new lite-on cd-rw drive, 52x/32x/52x, which i've been using for a couple of months i guess. it hasn't given me any trouble until tonight, when a cd (just a burnt cd, nothing important) EXPLODED inside the drive. has anyone ever had this happen to them? it seems like a weird kind of thing to happen, especially this randomly.

pics, just so you get what i'm saying. this is what it looked like after hearing a loud, almost firecracker-like bang coming from my computer, and opening the cdrom drive:

Holy crap.

I've used quite a few lite-on CD-RW's (I have probably the same one you do in my system now, actually) and never had anything remotely like this happen while the CD was just being read. I have heard of it happening while burning, but only when several CD's have been burnt in a row and it overheats. A flaw in the CD itself, maybe?

I had a cd explode in a cd-rom drive before. I took the drive apart and shook out all the pieces i could find, but when I powered it back up, there was a bad burning smell and the drive was toast. Hope you have better luck than I did!!

I"ve heard of it many times.. happened to me once too.. it broke my brothers sim city 4 CD!!!

There is this show on the dicovery channel called myth busters.. and they had a segment on exploding CDs... they came to the conclusion that it can happen.. but you shouldn't feel unsafe.. heheh it was cool watching them shatter CDs... I once read in MAX PC that some companies actually make re enforced front Bezels on the CD drive so that when a CD explodes it doesn't fly out of the drive and hurt you.. on yeah did i mention that in that TV the CD shards cut right through this gel that is supposed to mimic human flesh? :D

When i took out all the CD shards.. the CD drive workde find lol... no problems for over 3 years...

That is awesome.

well it wasn't cracked when i put it in. i took it right off of a spindle of a bunch of cd's, and just popped it in as i usually would. it wasn't particularly old or anything like that either.

haha, just got all the little pieces out of it with some good ol' compressed air. there's little pieces of the label EVERYWHERE, on my hands, the floor, etc. :p

EDIT: works fine, just burnt a cd. i guess i'm in luck. :D

Probably exploded because there was a little air bubble inside the CD that expanded and shattered the cd

I have a set of cheapo office depot CD-Rs that are warped, and the first few I burnt were off balance so bad that as soon as they spun up to be read, they shattered almost instantly.

Could it be something like that?

I've heard about it a lot and seen it happen to other people, usually happens if the disc is damage or its axis is off when it's spinning. These high speed drives spin thousands and thousands of times per minute, it's killer.

LOL, thats the funniest thing I've ever seen!! I saw a Myth Busters show about that.

TekieB, not to worry. I use Lite-On and NEC drives myself, and while Lite-On drives sound like a jet engine when they really start to spin, I haven't had any disc blow up and scar me yet. Dozens upon dozens of cds burned or used, all have burned perfectly and such without a hitch.

Just make sure your discs are inserted correctly and make sure they're not damaged.

jeses, i've never even heard of this until now. that's just crazy!

lol i have one of those lite-on 52-32-52 cd burners and everytime i pop a cd in it it literally scratches the edges of every cd i had.

I saw that myth busters as well, pretty funny stuff watching a CD explode.

And I have never had that happen to me, yet, and I plan to get Lite-On hardware when I FINALLY get my new PC.

I have a samsung 52x drive, it sounds like a muffled fan jet kinda thing when it's up to speed.

Supposedly however to get to true 52X I need to hold the eject button for 10 seconds. That sets it, otherwise it limits itself to slower speeds I think. It does this to help with the shattered CD issue. Not sure if it's true but I read this somewhere.

It happens.

FWIW, it's less likely to happen on a brand new CD-R that you just took out of the case and are recording for the first time than it is on a disc that has been played previously. The reason is obvious - the previously played discs have been subjected to loading over time, thus more susceptible to micro-cracking/failure than a brand new disc which hasn't been spun in a drive.

Though in this case it was a brand new CD that failed, so that's not exactly comforting either.

I had a brand new 52x Samsung CDROM a couple of years back that did exactly the same thing. All I heard was a hell of a loud bang and then a lot of scraping noises before it went silent. The supplier I got the drive from didnt believe me until I sent it back to him, and he shook out what remained of my printer driver disc :)

In my case it was apparently the motor in the drive speeding up, not stopping at the max speed and the disc spinning off balance and shattering.
