CD/DVD-Rom mounting question

I'm in the planning stage for a mod I'm going to do this summer, and I have a question about mounting cd/dvd-roms. Have any of you encountered any problems with mounting drives at an angle? I've looked at my drive[Sony DRU-510A] and it has tabs on the tray to keep a cd from falling into the drive, so I suppose it's possible to do, but I'm still curious as to problems that this may cause, aside from possible strain on the motor. Would the fact that it even has tabs on the tray mean that it's capable of withstanding the strain of being mounted at an angle?

I plan to mount my drive at roughly 60 degrees.
 
There's no problem what-so-ever. CD Drives are designed to operate on any angle between 0° and 90°. When's the last time you saw anyone with a PSP2 laying flat? As long as you can get the media to stay put long enough for the door to close you're all set. If you're really worried get a slot load CD.

After the door closes on a CD, before it "spins-up" the motor lifts from under the media pressing it into a plastic spindle mounted in the top of the case. When spinning the media is basically floating suspended only by the spindle on top and the motor underneath. Then the laser reads it regardless of what position it's in.

That little spindle is what prevents people from modding windows into the entire top of the CD drive (unless it's one of the models with the spindle mounted to a cross member instead of the top of the drive. If you look at the top of your drive you'll probably see either a silver disk or the impression of that disk under the label (depending on where the manufacturer places labels)... that silver disk is what's holding the spindle in place.

You have nothing to worry about at all, there's no additional strain on any components at a 60° angle.
 
I knew how the drive and all worked, but I still wondered if it would place any extra strain on the drive motor itself. However, since it's not going to strain it or anything, I'm going to go ahead with it.

Horizontal axis being off works fine, but the vertical axis may not. Many reports of trying to mount a drive vertically resulted in the drive not working correctly. Not quite sure which way you were thinking of mounting the drive, so I'd figure I'd mention that.
