When I open up "My Computer" there is no icon at all for CD drives. I initially thought it was a hardware problem, so I tried replacing -both- the ribbon cable and cd drive. The result did not change... Either windows xp or my motherboard doesnt seem to understand that there is a CD drive there.

p.s. This is NOT the computer in my signature

Did the CD-Drive used to work, and just vanished one day? If so, I have an idea as to what might be the problem. Sometimes programs like Easy CD Creator or CloneCD can cause an issue in the registry that make your CD Drives invisible, and put an exclamation point next to them in device manager. There is a MS Knowledge base article on this. You have to removed the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters" values from the registry and reboot. Do a little searching on google for upperfilters/cd drive disappeared, and you should find the article (if of course, these are the symptoms of your problem...im just taking a guess).

edit: I assume your CD Drive does show up in the bios..correct? If not, then the above will have no chance of helping.

yes it used to work... and I did install a program that made it not work... then uninstalled the program

Does the CD drive light still turn on?
Does the CD tray eject when ya hit the button?
Is it still listed in the BIOS?

Happened on my sisters computer yesterday.. DUNNO WTF HAPPENED!! rofl.

Usually F1 or DEL to get into a BIOS... this a brand name puter? Might be different then.

It's listed in my BIOS....

as I suspected, its a windows xp problem. now, how do I fix it?

You might try Tweakui from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

After you install it, expand My Computer in the left hand pane then drives.

Worth a shot in regards to the icon matter.

But your problem is more than that so;

you might also try uninstalling it from Device Manager then rebooting and letting XP

install it again.

Or plan C: the regedit that havenoclu mentioned above:

1) Open the Registry Editor:
2) Go to Start then select Run.
3) Type regedit and click OK.

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

Restart your computer.

Edit: What are they saying in the other thread like this in Operating Systems?:)

When I go to that exact folder in the regedit, the upperfilter and lowerfilter values arent there.

Ok.

Since you've deleted all the software you recently installed for the drive, maybe you only need to try an uninstall from device manager then, if you haven't already.

Have you done that with no success either?

Here is that part of the solution for those that are following and may have a similar problem:

4. On the File menu, click Export. 5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save. 6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2. 7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes. 8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Edit: And since essentially the same thread was started first in Operating Systems SpeedRunner, let' s have the conversation continue there. :)
