My best friends grandpa died and they are trying to gain access to his computer. Ive tried burning Hirens Boot disk, the Geek Squad MRI to a CD. I tried on 2 computers with 2 different disks and it seems to be burning and i can see its been written but when you stick the disk into a computer to try it it doesnt even see the disk.
Ive tried about 4 different softwares to burn and im getting the same result on all of them. Before you ask yes im finalizing the disks.

Ive spent about 4 hours on this and im just lost really. Maybe im missing something as this is exhausting me. Any help is appreciated.

If you have any alternative methods of cracking the Windows Password/SAM file using a USB flash drive then please post up so i can at least help his family ASAP.

One of the most useful tools there is, I'd say. If you can't get it working with a recordable CD (and do use CD-RW since it's a godsend in such situations), you can try - that's try using Unetbootin to write the ntpass CD ISO directly to a USB stick which should basically make it bootable from the gitgo. It should be a workable solution.
 
i'm sorry, just their grandfather's computer isn't reading the discs you are burning or you can't get ANY computer to read the discs you're burning?

Also, if all thhey need is files you don't have to crack the password, you can hook up their hard drive to a different machine (directly with sata or pata, or via a usb enclosure)
 
I cant get any computer to read the disks. They need the files and contact information, email addresses, etc. Would be much easier for me to just clear the password then to pull the HDD and all that.
 
the only software i've ever really used to burn discs is imgburn, you can try that if you want. But either way, let's go through this.
1) you download the bootable discs (they are iso files right?)
2) you start up your burning software and find the option to "burn iso" or whatever it may be called in your software (you are not just dragging the iso file onto the disc)
3) once finished, you put the bootable disc into the offending computer (which has a compatable disc player, dvd+, dvd-, cd, whatever)
4) You boot up the offending machine and either go straight to bios to change the boot order, or select the boot menu and select the disc drive
5) it doesn't boot to disc?


Is the contact information in outlook, outlook express, or windows mail?

Thats correct. I dont know how the contact information is. Its password protected....
 
what do the offending computers say when you try to boot to the disc? No boot media present? Do they not give any errors at all?

your other options are:
1)pull the drive and out and copy the files. Outlook will store all messages and contacts as a .pst file. Outlook express might have a .wab file if you're lucky, or maybe he exported the contacts as a csv file. Windows mail will store as a .wab file or all the contacts will simply be in his
/users/ [acount goes here] /contacts/
folder

You'll need to reinstall the program to import the corresponding file (windows mail has replaced outlook express)

they have a floppy version for password removal (does his computer have a floppy drive?)
