CD- and DVD- Writing Software

For years, I have been using Nero - 5, 6 and 7. I'm looking for a replacement.

I copy disks, I write data- and audio- disks from files from my hard disk, and I burn images. That's all.

I don't want a cheesy media-player, I don't want a fancy "StartSmart" popup and I don't want the million other useless apps that ship with Nero. I certainly don't want some feeble "Ask Toolbar" which, conveniently, installs itself by default. (Its probably not spyware, but it annoys me that it's included at all.)

Please suggest a good, reliable program that burns disks and does not include hundreds of megabytes of cruft. K3B is a good example of what I'm looking for, from Linux, but it does not run on Windows.

ImgBurn sounds about perfect for what you want to do. I switched a while back (from Nero as well) and haven't looked back.

ImgBurn looks cool. I'll try it.

The fact that it's made by the author of everyone's favourite piece of Windows software, DVD Decryptor, is encouraging.

I'm also looking at a product called "ONES" by PrassiTech. It's shareware and it doesn't have an official home page (that I can find) so it's not coming across all professional-like.

CD Burner XP Pro is a really good and free program. The current release isn't supported by Vista, but it will work on other versions of Windows.

If you like the Linux software, maybe you should just go ahead and use Linux?

I do use Linux...

... in fact, I *live*, *eat*, *sleep* and *breath* Linux...

... at work.

I use it at home for music, because NOTHING beats Amarok and FLAC, but, mostly, I use XP MCE '05 because games don't run under Linux and it's easier to watch videos with a green-button remote and MS Media Centre than it is to fight with non-free codecs. My home PC is there for entertainment only.

Yes, I could force my entertainment to work under Linux, but it's far too much like hard work. Entertainment is for relaxing, by definition. (That said, I entertained myself by installing windows 26-times last Sunday - on one PC. I had just discovered nLite and I wanted to see how far I could go before it broke. What fun!)

Due to the fact that FAT32 remains the only arguably-acceptable file system that works on both platforms, I find it useful to be able to write disks from both platforms.

Nero burning rom ALONE isnt all that bad. I had terrible nero experiences before i stripped down the install to the bare minimum. But i agree to try image burn and cdburnerxppro ( http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ )

Both apps do a great job.

i always get buffer underrun issues i checked my ram and setup and everything i can think of what are the main causes of this? burning a cd at 10-25% cpu usage with a e6600 dual core normal setttings in bios and 2gb+ ram plus 4 sata 300gb drives at 2-4gb virtual memort set automaticly..and its on an ide drive changing the settings inside of nero dont help even if you set the speed to 8 x and its a 52x or 16x dvd burner.... wtf?its dma matching the way it should in bios.........windows media player dont work with it either or clone cd any suggestions? or just nero is fu..ed

I tried ImgBurn and I'm happy.

Thanks, everyone who suggested it.

There should be a sticky under "General Software" listing light-weight, community-approved alternatives to popular commercial bloatware.

+1 for imgburn

dvd decrypter is probably the best window app evah.

does anyone know any free alternatives to alcohol 120 (not daemon tools) my conscience is getting at me but I am a poor, but if I have to perform some "favors" to keep alcohol I will ;)

Well, I always liked Daemon tools, but they've gone all pro on us...

... I'll continue using it until the side-effects of going "pro" start to show.

I know it's not what you asked for, but it's all I've got.

ImgBurn makes images? Why not use ImgBurn to make them and Daemon to mount them? If you're trying to avoid Securom (*cough*) because "a backup" of some disk that your "kids" lost/scratched/broke/swallowed won't work, use Y.A.S.U.
