Does anyone know of any, eh... side effects If I were to cover half of a white CCFL with electrical tape? I don't like the incredible *looking-at-the-surface-of-the-sun-after-an-eye-checkup* factor found in these things!

I've had some UV cathodes melt before, but if I were to cover, say half of it with white electrical tape, and the other half with a thin sheet of tracing paper (it gives a MUCH nicer white glow), would anyone think I'd be in danger? I have good airflow in the case, and the inverter will be actively cooled with a heatsink.

Any ideas?
 
That would work perfectly fine. Don't cover the invertor though.

That would be "passive cooling", not "active cooling".
 
Well I've got 4 inverters side by side, so I thermal epoxied an old Vreg heatsink (from a P1 computer) into the ferrite bars on each transformer. Coupled they're directly in the path of 3 40mm intake fans in a lower meshed-bay. They're cool to the touch (used to get really hot).

Passively active I guess :).

Awesome for the info, this makes my task of finding 4" white CCFLs moot.
 
You electrically coupled the "outer bits" of the coils together? Did you try powering them up to see if they work?

I've never heard of doing this, nor would I expect them to work.

I'm not syaing they DON'T work, I'm just saying I don't THINK they'll work.

I'd think the "outer bits" of the coils would have some electrical connections to them.

They're made out of ferrite, which, to my knowledge, has a very high resistance.

In addition, the thermal adhesive I used was non-metallic (the ceramique stuff).

Everything works fine :).
