Catalyst Media Center

No you don't. Save yourself the trouble, and explore the more polished PVR applications. I'd recommend SageTV and BeyondTV if you don't mind paying for software, MythTV if you know linux, and GB-PVR or Meedio if you like free software (although you do get what you pay for.)

Sage tv and Beyond tv just feel like unpolished turds to me. I'm seriously thinking about just ordering MCE2005 with the Vista upgrade coupon.

In that case, defintely don't try the Catalyst Center because it is far, far worse. If SageTV or BeyondTV don't feel "polished" enough, your best option is going to be MCE.

And even then it'll probably feel like something fished out of the toilet to you.

But yeah, if thats how you see two of the best PVR apps out there then don't even give CMC another thought.

I know that they are the best out there. I just want something that is more visually appealing if I have to look at it every day. I have BTV. I just don't have the time or energy to explain everything to the spouse. She's fussy. I ordered MCE2005, so it should be something that she can handle.

I was just looking to try what ATI has been promising us customers for so long.

On another note, am I correct in assuming that MCE can not do PIP?

TIA

I *believe* Sage is the only one that can do PIP, but perhaps Myth can too. You could always try different skins too you know :)

Catalyst Media Center should be able to. PowerCinema 5 can. I tried the trial version and it worked flawlessly with my aiw and PVR-500 mce. I could watch and record all three tv sources at once.

Does anyone know how the scheduled record works in CMC? Will the recording take place if the application is closed or do you have to leave the application running all the time?

I'll find out tomorrow at any rate since I have some scheduled recordings setup, but ati support didn't answer my very simple question (well they replied, but only with a bunch of links that didn't answer the question) and I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere else. So hopefully google will pick this up for any other inquisitors :)

Myth does PIP quite well, actually. It is also skinnable, and I found some very nice ones from one of the nice guys in #mythtv-users that has helped answer my questions before:

I use blootube, and it looks great.

The AIW card is, unfortunately, useless with myth as far as I'm aware. Gatos drivers may have solved this, but I don't know.

Good luck with your setup.

Catalyst Media Center records when the main app is closed. When I had it open and it tried to intitiate a recording schedule the program crashed and I lost the recording. The mpgs it creates also crash explorer. Then I looked at it funny and it crashed

I wish that this stuff was a lot more polished and stable :(
