So I'm the new owner of an X1900XTX. At the moment I'm running with all the default settings in Catalyst Control Center. What should I configure?

I noticed in the HardOCP review of the X1900 series they were able to run Need for Speed Most Wanted with 4xAA and 16xhqaf at 1600x1200. If I configure this I get a lot of hitching in my game even at 1280x1024. My system is mostly the same with the exception that my CPU is running at 2.4ghz (Athlon X2) and the one used in the review was running at 2.6ghz.

So, which settings in here should I configure? I'm a bit confused as to why I can't run at the settings HardOCP was able to obtain.

Maybe the hitching is caused by a fragmented harddrive, or not enough RAM?

It's definately not the card though, i have no hitching issue's in BF2, NFSMW and Oblivion. The games i currently play with my XTX.
 
It's because you shouldn't configure settings such as that in Catalyst Control Center, but in the games themselves.

Here's how I set everything up in CCC:
Standard settings: Click on "use custom settings."
Anti-Aliasing: "Let the application decide."
Antisoptric Filtering: Click "Let the application decide" and "High Quality AF"
Catalyst AI: Slide it to "advanced."
Mipmap detail level: Slide it to "high quality."
API specific: make sure "enable geometry instancing," "support DXT texture formats," and "triple buffering" are selected, but keep "alternate pixel center" and "force 24-bit z-buffer depth" disabled.

Then configure things like resolution, AA/AF, etc. in the game's own settings.

This could lower image quality in some cases, it's definately not recommended (and necessary).

Regarding in-game or CCC FSAA/AF, it's not my experience that this causes or solves hitching.
 
could be the ram throughput ,

try overclocking fsb(HTT) if you can and see if it helps ,

also slow/fragmented harddrive could cause this
 
I don' think its the hard drive, I'm running a Raptor 150. I have 2gigs of Corsair PC3200 running at 2-3-3-6 1T command rate. Both of these are better than what the HardOCP test were run on.
 
In my case Catalyst A.I. disabled would give me a muuuuuuch smoother gameplay.
 
We leave all CCC options at default except we disable VSYNC.

We use the in-game options to enable AF and AA.
 
Need for Speed: Most Wanted is not designed for multithreading. You must manually set the processor affinity to get rid of the hitching. Even with the affinity set, Most Wanted still tends to run extremely poorly. Framerates are great on my XTX, but the the game still stutters like crazy.

An unplayable port of an X360 game, in my opinion.

the game played well on my pc , it had a stutter here and there , nothing major ,
 
You don't have a multiprocessor system. I had issues - I don't know if it's widespread or not, but I know others with the same issue.

Its awful, I thought 2GB of RAM would take care of it but naaaaah, thought my system wasnt right.
