Just picked these up and threw them onto my compy.

Crysis Benchmark Tool

DX10
64-bit
Very High (All settings)
16xQ AA
1920x1200

Catalyst 9.7 - 29.745 FPS
Catalyst 9.8 - 36.385 FPS

:D

WoW still crashes my PC. It worked with the drivers that came with windows 7 but not 9.7 or 9.8.

What a mess!

You do realize that you are not actually running 16xQ AA, since it's not supported by AMD cards.

I just started playing through Crysis again, and I have to say there was a noticeable improvement in smoothness after 9.8. I'm running the same settings as the first dude except no AA and 16x AF.

Does it matter? The point was he saw an increase between drivers.

It matters, because no card (or combination of cards, in this case two HD 4870 X2) can muster 16xAA (much less Radeons, that don't even support it) in Crysis at those settings and resolution. They can barely use 4xAA, as was shown by [H] and since then, there were no miraculous driver improvements to allow such a high AA setting (even it was possible) and still be above 30 fps (which was barely kept with just 4xAA).

Mentioning a boost between drivers is one thing. Lying about settings with which those drivers were tested, is quite another.

Really, then whats that 16xQ AA setting I see in Catalyst?

I've never seen it available for my 4870 in CCC, so presumably it's a special CF mode (I thought they were 12x and 24x, but I only ever run single-GPU configurations) - in which case I'm man enough to admit I'm wrong.
It is an impressive boost from a driver update, but still must be unplayable at those settings? I found that I needed to average 60FPS in the timedemo to make the later levels run smoothly.

I don't know if ATi supports Q AA or whatever... but that apparently doesn't stop it from being an option in the AA dropdown box when you're setting up a run in Crysis Benchmark Tool. I also ran it under 4x AA and only saw a very slight FPS increase (37.005fps, I think).

For your viewing pleasure...

Not sure why it says it's under Vista 64, I'm running Win7 64.

As you can see, it says 16xQ AA

Wow, over 1.5 years after the release of Crysis, ATI is finally getting half decent numbers. ;-)
It's only going to help ATI cards look "not as bad" in Crysis benchmarks, but unfortunately won't help users all that much since most of them (like me) have completed Crysis already. :-<

I guess if Crysis wasn't used in Graphics Card benchmarks as much as it is, we'd never get performance updates... but don't get me wrong, it's great that ATI is continuing to improve its drivers... but Crysis improvements are not going to help out most users unless they're still playing it.

That's strange cause WoW works fine with 9.7 and 9.8 for the system in my sig.

What video card do you have?

You ever think it might not be the drivers?

If someone has access and time I'd like to see 9.7 - 9.8 comparisons of SF4 and RE5 benchmarks. I know the SF4 score dropped (for most) but I wonder if RE5 also got hit.

You aren't actually running "16xQ AA" in Crysis, it is impossible on AMD cards. That is an NVIDIA setting. Setting it on the game or through a third party app will not force an option the hardware does not support. In reality, either AA is OFF when this setting is used, or AA is at the next lowest possible supported level.

Yes, 16xAA is the highest in the CCC(only 8AA allowed in game), not sure if you can force AA in crysis or not due to the way it handles AA in game.

I think QAA is the nvidia equivalent of ATi AA anyway. Not sure though.

4770 and it worked fine with the drivers that came with the RC iso afterwords system crashes.

Its not super serious currently as I have a lower powered system that can play it fine on an older 4670.

I've been riding on the initial release for Win 7 RC (9.6?) and these are a definate improvement.

Hrmmm.. that is indeed strange.

Are your motherboard BIOS and chipset drivers up to date?

If I had to guess I'd say it's dropping down to 16x AA, considering I get better FPS when I manually set the AA to 4x. Granted, not much better FPS (less than 1fps better), but then 4xxx series ATi cards don't really suffer much from turning AA on anyway.

But yeah, the results are a bit "meh" for dual 4870x2's.

Anyway this is really impressive already even if its"only" 8xAA.

Can't help to wonder why the "fix" of quadfire performance comes now in 9.8 and not earlier though..

it could just be from ATI updating the profile settings most likely.. especially if some games are getting worse performance then they were before and some are getting better.. but it is good to see ATI doing more updates instead of 1 per month.. this is what the 3rd update in 2 months now?

also TotalLamer notice in the picture when you did the test with the 4xAA and the 16xQAA that the avg frame rate only dropped 1 FPS.. that would be an obvious sign that its defaulting back to 8xAA which is the highest setting possible for ATI cards in the game..

Does this fix Edge-Detect AA 4x (12x CSAA) and 8x (24x CSAA) such as no more 80% performance drop?

Noticed a lot of performance improvements with the 4890 with these drivers. 9.8 is a keeper.

I am thinking of purchasing a 4890. What kind of fps can I expect running 1680 X 1050 or 1900 X 1200 with all of the options on very high? This vid card would be paired with an i7.

I ended up going back to 9.7 , 9.8 broke MLB 2k9 on my 4850X2 missing textures, see-through walls, artifacts (and no my video card is not overclock) same with nba 2k9 for pc, some of the players/coaches hair are now see through like their wearing a hair net LOL :D so back to 9.7

Dennis, keep in mind you should only use the drivers from Sapphire for that card. ATi doesn't support the 4850x2 because only sapphire made it, it's not a reference board.

Since catalyst 9.2 ATI added full support for the 4850 X2 I don't see why I couldn't used this, I used the 9.7 from AMD/ATI site without a single problem on any game. But correct me if I'm wrong I been with nvidia for 4 years this is my first ati card so I'm new to ati drivers.

It great but somehow my CCC is keep gets error and can not open so I have to restart my computer to view my CCC.

I might be wrong then... I'm not sure

Sapphire has continued to post drivers for that card up to 9.7, I'm unsure if they're altered in any way though now.

Still getting the freezing in wow with my 4850. Just completely stops everything except sound for about 10 seconds and then the box pops up that the ati driver stopped working. I will verify that my other drivers are up to date tonight but my system runs perfect except in wow.
