Today is 10th Dec and we should get a new driver. The Media Alert is already out from AMD but not sign of the driver yet:
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/081210/20081209006567.html?.v=1
ATI Catalyst driver update 8.12 and the free ATI Video Converter utility are both available for free download now at http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html.

Edit: The driver is now up

This might help for some people who got BSOD during install:
I figured out how to get rid of the Crossfire BSOD after installing the driver upon loading into vista

Go into safe mode disable the ATI external event viewer

then reboot go into catalyst and enable cross fire
reboot and then re-enable the event viewer
and everything should work fine !
When you go into safe mode go to start menu and right click on My computer
click on manage then go to down to services and disable the ati external event viewer

its causing you to bsod but its trying to engage crossfire or something at the wrong time or something. thats why you need to diable it then manually select crossfire and then restart and renable it then it will work fine and not cause the bsod !

Sweet. In for some performance upgrade :)

I'm not holding my breath there. If they didn't change them from beta I saw little to no difference except some added crashes and a very buggy media converter.

I'm hoping they at least got the media converter working better and fixed the crashing.

Sweet ready... for some revolutionary ground breaking drivers. Here we go.

oh god! this is good news to me!
not only update the drive for the card but also the day of Playstation Home release for PS3 lol

Saaay whaaaat!!! I had no clue Home was being released today! Hopefully the 8.12's will give us an fps increase in GTA 4.

WTF? Really?

Maybe they got ahold of whatever nvidia was doing to give the GTX series such a performance lead in crysis. The 4800/GTX are pretty much trade blows in every game but crysis/warhead.

Meh AVIVO converter still doesn't work for me. I got only sound no pictures. GPU clock speed still stays at 3D clock after using the converter, it won't drop back to 2D speed without a reboot.

If anyones running the beta drivers and upgrades to these, can you post your performance differences?

With any luck they will have some GTA4 enhancements as well, I'd like to be able to force AA, do something about the shadows which look like they've been added with the spraypaint tool from MSPAINT.EXE

this is great. I can't wait for my raptor so I can install vista and finally use the 4870x2 I got.

Update: The converter works but it doesn't work with an encoded video, you need a video that is not encoded yet. The 3D clock problem is still there.

can someone with crossfired 4850's confirm these work?

+1
I am not going to upgrade unless I hear a lot of good things. For the games I am playing right now, (Prince of Persia [building up to playing the new one by doing the old ones], l4d, COD:WAW dx10) there just aren't any real improvements...

At least ones big enough to arrant risking my MBR again...

The converter is insane, I tried a video file that is supported by the converter and it converts it into an ipod file in 4mins compared to 25mins using videora on my 3.2GHz quad core. I just hope that they will support more codecs later.

Is the video encoder included in the Cats or do I have to use the separate AVIVO converter?

I couldn't find the option in the 8.12 drivers so I installed the separate package (though it's for the X1000 series from the notes). That version simply would crash with an error.

To use the converter, you need to install the latest Catalyst 8.12 and the 8.12 Avivo Package found under "Additional Downloads" on AMD website. To open the program, go to Catalyst Control Centre and use Basic view, you will find Avivo Video Converter there.

well i guess that isnt a big issue with the shadow bug is it?
i mean it so minor i bet 99% of the player wouldnt catch that lol
unless it will lower performance... i dont see why it will affect much...
or does it happen to certain ATI card?

They don't work for me. I still get the BSOD with these drivers. ATI/AMD sucks!!! I have tried them with dual monitor and single, no go. I tried updating my chipset drivers, no go. I would say that those of us with 4850 CrossfireX have to continue using 8.10.

My 4850 crossfire setup has worked with every single driver I've tried from 8.10-8.12 including every BETA I've tested...

It's a problem with you and your inability to install drivers don't you know!!@@ ;)

I have the same problem as you mate as do many, MANY others. 8.6 and 8.10 are the only drivers that have worked for me without bsod's during install or a bsod when switching to 2nd monitor. It's because I'm a retard though no doubt and is no fault of anyone else according to some people here who know who they are. I will try 8.12 this weekend but do not have high hopes based on what I've read so far from others of us who have the exact same problem.

Oh hell no? This for real?

The answer to the big bang I presume?

Thought the sapphire drivers were the official 8.12s from yesterday, but I think they are actually betas. Going to install these and
report back with some far cry 2, crysis, and crysis warhead results.

The converter is still more of a tech demo. It's insanely picky about the source.

not working?
1. uninstall drivers
2. update motherboard bios
3. use nfr or driver cleaner of some sort
4. run ccleaner (From filehippo.com) ... delete all crap found
5. restart pc ... cancel any install messages upon reboot
6. manually install drivers...
7. restart... still no luck? install drivers again, on top of the first install.

***extra***
if you modded your bios, try finding a bios that does work with these drivers. many users mod their bios and cannot use drivers past 8.6 ... even if it installed catalyst interface 8.11 or 8.12 the drivers might just be 8.6 if that happens... then make sure you get a bios that excepts the drivers as well.

Installed and everything runs at least as well as 8.11's; no new issues. Still can't run 3d apps with any sort of Overdrive enabled (even just having the box checked but no OC causes a cash on 3d app launch).

Got a decent increase in Crysis; with all settings max, 8xaa, 1920x1080 I was getting 29.8 FPS avg with the 64 bit DX10 GPU benchmark beach flythru demo, and now I'm getting 35 avg with 8.12.

*edit* Turns out my AA was somehow disabled and I didn't notice; running the same things again with 8.12's gives 27fps avg with 8xaa enabled. Still not terrible, but hardly the huge increase I was hoping for (25% my ass)

Note that both of those figures are with Catalyst A.I. set to advanced. I honestly have no idea what that does, but I do know that with it disabled I was barely pulling 17 fps avg with the 8.11's in the same demo. Can anyone explain to me what Cat A.I. is real quick, and if I should always have it enabled w/advanced selected?

This works for me:

Uninstall Catalyst drivers in add/remove programs
Restart
Press F8 before windows starts - go in safe mode
Run driver sweeper / clean ati drivers
Manually delete all ati folders in "program files" folder
Manually delete ATI folders in "App Data" folder and subfolders
Restart
Install CCC Drivers

- I always use this method when install drivers. Probably a bit overkill, but I never have
issues installing the catalyst drivers this way.
