Catalyst 7.3 Released

I'd be willing to bet the external service is trying to automatically determine PNP monitors so you don't have to download the proper monitor driver and colour profiles.

If it does not find it in time, it will not use the driver (just generic LCD or whatever) But in doing so, Vista itself will BSOD on a critical component not loading. If your monitor happens to be *off* or in standby mode when booting, the driver will not load. It will also remember this for the next time you boot, so you get no screen, lol.

I used to have the same problem with Harddrives that took 15 seconds to properly initialize (sometimes it would/sometimes it wouldn't) Vista will then determine that your system has changed, and will not boot up. Luckily most Bioses support harddrive timeouts up to 30 seconds nowadays.

It also used to rarely happen with DHCP timeouts and XP, it would not cause a BSOD, but it would disable the network card until you did a Ipconfig /renew.

Vista = evil BTW. ATi and Nvidia and every addin cardmaker for that matter.

Prior to this fix I would BSOD 2 of every 3 boots.
Set ATI EEU to manual in Services.
Once in Vista, start it thru Task Manager.
6 straight boots, no probs.

I am finding that my video driver doesn't crash at all now on Vista64. It used to crash all the time with 7.2 on many different applications and this just isn't the case anymore.

7.3 is much more stable for me than was 7.2. STALKER is also running quite a bit better. I still get worse performance using Catalyst A.I. than with Cat AI turned off.

Are there Omega drivers for vista 64x? If so, are they any good.... anyone?

ATi posted a hot fix for the BSOD issues.

Good news. Below is an email that will go out in the next few minutes to journalists that are following the problem. It is only appropriate that I post it here first, because to be very honest, without the help of this thread we would not have been able to solve this issue (which in fact was not a catalyst bug - we just work around a potential Vista issue)

An intermittent interaction issue between Catalyst 7.3 and Vista has been resolved via a hotfix driver update. We apologize to all our users for any inconvenience this issue has caused. We especially want to thank the enthusiast and forum community on DriverHeaven.net for their patience and for sending us invaluable information to help us reproduce the issue in our labs. The hotfix driver update can be downloaded (link below) As an added bonus, we’ve introduced Crossfire support for the popular game Stalker!

Note: the hotfix has just been posted so it may take a few minutes to hit the server, so try again in a few minutes if its not currently there.

Installed 7.3 Cats then installed hot fix using the "update" option. Works great for me.

So far the only negative is my 3dMark06 score went down about a 100 pts.

Did you do this in safe mode? 'cause my BSOD's prevent me from booting normally.

No, first I uninstalled what I had. Rebooted, installed the 7.3's and right after updated with the hot fix download.

Why even install the 7.3? The hotfix is a full driver release as far as i can see....it contains everything 7.3 contains.

I couldn't tell so to be on the safe side I installed the 7.3 then the hotfix. If it works, great!

Some people had 7.3s working with user fixes.
Hotfix ended up being an update.
