For those interested in using the ATI Control panel instead of the Catalyst Control center, I've made an interesting discovery today.

Instead of clicking Radeon on the ATI site, click FireMV, then Current drivers. This links you to a download page with the 6.3 catalyst drivers with the option of either the CCC or the Control panel!!

I've done a review at another site and tested these drivers, and am yet to find any faults, but instead major gains! (well 1 fault actually, the "average FPS" on Ati-Tool's 3D view went down by about 200... but other then that I can't seem to find any)

I actually receive higher FPS in games now without the Catalyst Control Center, making me sure to forever try and avoid it.

I can't personally tell a difference between the FIREMV 6.3 cats and the regular Radeon 6.3 cats. I also don't have an explanation for the higher frame rates?

Important! The FIREMV 6.3's use the Control Panel, instead of the Catalyst Control Center. The control panel doesn't have some of the options (that I don't use anyway) that the Catalyst Control Center does. Could it be the CCC has that big of an impact on performance? These could also be a great solution to people who dislike the CCC?

ALL tests were done with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ OC'd to 2.4 Ghz, 2 GB of PC3200 ram OC'd to 480mhz DDR. Powercolor Radeon x1900xt OC'd to XTX speeds of 650/775.
 
This sounds interesting, but the one big "Q" I have is!!!
Is it wise to use the FireMV 6.3 drivers & control panel with the X1900 series cards, and what kind of issues and or problems could arise in the long run. It would be nice to hear from others that may have done this, because I can't use the CCC and ATI Tools, when try to find the max core & max mem, all I get is a black screen and nothing happens.
Also how long have you been useing the FireMV cats 6.3 & control Panel?
 
or, you could install just the catalyst driver, and the wmd drivers, and use ati tray tools as your "control panel" or "control center". that's what I do.
 
I installed Omega's drivers and as far as I can see CCC isn't installed. Of course I could be wrong.
Why not just go that route?
 
Its failrly old news that you can just get the FireMV drivers. But Im glad you're so happy about it. :)

Also, the screen you compared to that had 34fps and 32fps, are not the same. The 32fps screen has a bush on the left, where the 34fps screen doesnt. Oblivion does not render the same every time. Try a game that does, before you comit to never using CCC again because you think it gets lower frames.

I have been running Cat 6.3 with CP for a little over a month and have no bad effects I can tell at all.

And it's really smooth

The FireMV driver (same catalyst 6.3 driver) solution bypasses the need of a third party program, so if you dont want/trust/like them, you dont need them.

Because these are the real thing, as apposed to a third party drivedr/util. Some people prefer to go with whats actually made for their card, by the company.

yeah. I use ATI tray tools anyways though for overclocking, so I might as well take advantage of its CP replacement feature.
 
Er correct me if I'm wrong. The patch is a complete driver package. If you put it in over the either the 6.3's or the FireMV 6.3's your getting the same thing. My bench rig uses the Chuck+ATItool and that's it, works fine. The CP option under the FireMV been around awhile. Any differences in FPS could be the AI settings or lack of .net.

I'm guessing it's something like the AI settings, I guess it isn't even available (enabled) with just the control panel?
 
I'm still not quite sure I follow....but the ATI tray tools CCC/CP replacement isn't missing any features. including AI.
 
Sounds like a plan, I downloaded cat 6.3 & CP the other day, as well as the stan alone drivers just incase, my system does handle things as well. I will try cat 6.3 with CP and see how things work out.,,, Thanks much :cool:

Where did you get the Omega drivers from, the ATI site? cause I did not see them there. Im just thinking ahead and looking at any & all options ahead of time, just incase things don't work out for me with my other options.

it just plain works. you don't have to worry about oh, well, the CP isn't exactly meant to be used with the newest drivers, but it "seems" to work...

just do the above. it works, has all of the CCC features, plus a bunch extra.

The Omega drivers are not official ATI drivers. You can get them here:

It's a very good tool but according to recent version notes:

1.0.5.877 Release Candidate
* Overclocking for X1300/X1600/X1800/X1900 disabled in this release due to lack of information and without hardware sample in my laboratory.

The latest version is 1.0.5.880 but the notes don't mention anything about renabling overclocking:
* Fixed bug with auto fan control on R5xx boards (X1600/X1800/X1900)
* Updated injection code to allow to use custom made (fake) d3d dll files.
* Fixed bug with loading color profile using hot keys

Thank you fer the Omega Drivers Link, :) I do have ATI Tray Tools already Installed but have not tried to do anything with it other than use it as a Temp Monitor.
Im going to go try things out and see how it all works out and will post back.
