Catalyst 5.1 not working

I installed the Catalyst 5.1 drivers, and they seem to work fine for a couple of minutes, but then whatever game I am playing will lock up, and I will get an error message stating that the VPU was reset because it was no longer responding to commands. I have had no problems with earlier versions, and have been using the same settings since 4.7 or so. My vid card is a Gigabyte X800 XT. I tried the new drivers with four games....Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, Half-Life 2, Far Cry, and Men of Valor. Pretty much the same problem with each. This is sad because I did notice a speed increase...well, for as long as the game would play before crashing. Any suggestions?

Pentium 4 3.4GHz on Gigabyte 8KNXP, Gigabyte Radeon X800 XT, Sylvania F93 19" CRT, 1024MB Corsair XMS PC3200, Soundblaster Audigy 2, Dual Maxtor 160GB ATA-133 Hard Drives, Sony 52X24X52 CD Burner, Plextor PX-708A DVD Burner, Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse, Saitek Cyborg Evo Joystick, Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1 Speakers, Sony MDR-V600 Headphones

Simple question: is the vid card overlcocked at all? If so, you need to drop the core and memory speeds by 10MHz and try again. Keep dropping until it becomes stable. Different drivers allow different overclocks on video cards. The 5.1 set have increased my secondary comp's 9700 Pro OC to 370/350, where before it was 340/330.

No, I have never overclocked the card before, and I would hate to underclock it just to get it to work properly.

Incidentally, I did check the temp on my card in the ATI control panel, and it reads 40 C. Is that too high? I am using 4.12 drivers.

Nah 40c sounds right I have a X800XT and it hovers around 39C idle and 45C max at load and games run flawless.

Sigh....I wonder what could be so different about the 5.1 drivers from all the rest of them? I have had no problems whatsoever with every other catalyst release.

I just made a clean windowsxp install on my brother in law computer installing the Cats 5.1 "over" microsoft default drivers, everything went flawless, tried several games like NFSU2 and CODUO which covers D3D and OGL and both games worked ok.

Perhaps your card is overheating or is not getting enough juice from the agp slot..

Disable Fast Writes, set the AGP in the bios to 4X to test it, turn off shadowing/caching, make sure your chipset drivers are installed (reinstall them if need be), disable vpu recover.

Turned out that my card had some dust stuffed inside the fan and heatsink. Cleaned that out, and now it seems to be working fine with the 5.1 drivers.

Just one of the last things ya think about, or at least I do.

Sounds like a driver conflict which did not get uninstalled propperly.

You should be fine now that you reinstalled everything and put the 5.1 ver into the computer first.

Yeah make sure you are using SP2 with the 5.1s, as well as having current .NET, especially if you're using catalyst control center. I had the same issues with SP1a so I broke down and installed sp2.

The last drivers that worked for me are the 4.9's any drivers after that won't let my refresh rate go above 60hz and that is if I can even get it to boot. I tried the 5.1's today and I got everything working and while playing Chaos Theory beta it hardlocked and I couldn't get my PC to boot after unless in safe mode. So back to the 4.9's. :( Maybe a power supply problem?

No i think the 5.1s sucks major balls. My computer also locked out and i got thrown out of half life 2 on the 5.1 drivers.
I went back to 4.9 too

So you can't get any drivers past 4.9 to work right either? Even though the problem is not fixed it's always nice to not be the only one with the issue. :) Are you using BNC cables from card to monitor? Because someone told me that was my problem.

I use BNC cables for mine and I have no issues.
