Catalyst 4.10 - Mathematically pissed.

Does anyone else think the new Catalyst 4.10 designation is beyond moronic?
If the last version was 4.9 then the next version is 5.0....it's not 4.10 or 4.11 or even 4.20! Last time I checked 4.10 < 4.9...hell....4.10 == 4.1.
Guess what else? 4.100 still == 4.1

So until the magical day that some driver comes out that's > 4.9, I won't be upgrading my 9800.
 
Chapters/Sections in texts go by this "logic" aswell. *sigh* oh well..
 
Its based on year.month so its ok.

Microsoft does it with their own drivers too, its based on numerical values, not decimal values.

Like 1.0.0.40 is newer than 1.0.0.2, and 5.1.2600.0 is newer than 5.1.1.0 (major revision. minor revision. release revision. bugfix)
 
OR, ATi could release drivers based on Microsoft's naming. Personally I greatly prefer the year.month ATi scheme, and hope that microsoft someday moves to it.

ATi Catalyst 4.9 is actually 6.14.10.6476 (according to microsofts naming scheme) Earlier versions would be like 6.14.10.5xxx, later versions 6.14.1x.7xxx
 
Chronological driver dating schemes rate up there with the Gruntmaster 6000.

If I wanted to know the file's creation date then I'd look at it's creation date.

It's not mathematical notation. It's major.minor versioning. This is just the standard practice; it's not supposed to look like 4 1/10.

Ever done any object-oriented programming? We use dots for that too, to define when we're moving from an object to an attribute. If you've got an instance a of class X, with attributes b and c, that doesn't mean a.c is greater than a.b. Yet we use the notation that way. In other words, every discipline has its own internal standards of notation, which cannot automatically be interpreted the same way as those of another discipline.
 
Who the hell cares what they call it. They could call it driver version "dumbass" after this thread's starter for all I care. Just as long as each revision is an improvement over the last.

I am a programmer. Everything relates to math and I say let them burn.
If they want to have an internal versioning number then so be it. Just don't release it for public consumption.

in response to your moronic post, you must be an nvidia lover..ever see the nvidia driver names? like..why is a new driver from nvidia being labeled as 61.xx when they just released a 66.xx?

they call it what they want to..they could call it asssnifferv2.0 if they wanted to. live with it.

I should post these types of threads more often. They really seem to bring out the flaming dunderheads. Clearly I must be anti-ATI since I disagree with any one aspect of their "godliness."
