I can't get any Linux distros to install in Hyper-V, is this a common problem?
 
Yes. hyper-v has lacking support for linux and is best suited to vista/server 08 installs.

i had to do some real witchcraft to even get ubuntu installed on it, and even then it failed to boot.
 
tha'ts really dumb, if you need to virtualize stuff and do it on Server 2008 for whatever reason your better off not using Hyper-V and just using virtualbox or vmware server. Does Hyper-V have any features that would make it better?
 
Its free with Server 08, that is a huge advantage imo with the assumption that the base OS will be server. The Hyper-V site states that it is only compatible with SUSE
 
If you can just use VMWare, and as stated above, VMWare server is free.

The HYPER-V site says the only MS supported version of Linux is Suse. They also supply Hyper-V optimization extensions for SUSE. They will not provide assistance for getting other distributions running or provide optimization extensions.

I have an Openfiler VM that I run for playing around with iSCSI running without any issues.

My guess is that most Linux versions will require some kernel parameters passed for the video to work properly, will need to be installed without using a GUI installer, and require the use of the legacy network adapter to install a GUI Linux version. Much like what is needed with MS's previous virtualization products.
 
Just last week I installed the latest Ubunto distro to Hyper-V and it installed fine. It wasn't as smooth as a Windows Installation with Guest Tools installed, but it ran fine.

I didn't do anything special and used the GUI installer...

Have you patched Hyper-V?

Where you able to install the guest tools? My hyper-v box runs headless and I'd like to tinker with linux.
 
Although Hyper-V support for Linux sucks and very limited. Hyper-V actually only support SUSE 10 & RedHat 5 at the moment. Even these do not work with ease. I was able to get many other distro to work as well. If you are having a problem setting it up you might want to look at How to Install Hyper-V & Run Linux & IC on it.

That post go step by step including snapshots of how to install Hyper-V then how to install a Linux OS on it as well the Integration Components for Linux. That should get you running in no time.

i am running Fedora Core 10 fine on my Hyper-V. granted i havent installed any vm additions since only SUSE 64 seems to have them atm. But no problems otherwise.
